MULTAN: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani inaugurated the new City Railway Station and inner ring road scheme from Bahawalpur Chowk to Vehari Chowk here on Saturday.

The new Multan City Railway Station has been built at a cost of Rs 45.521 million and will facilitate operations of passenger and express trains.

The new railway station will reduce passengers' burden on Cantonment Railway Station Multan by way of serving as an alternate facility for the commuters who love to travel by train.

The four kilometre long and 10.95 metre wide inner ring road portion from Bahawalpur Chowk to Vehari Chowk has been completed at a cost of Rs 532.30 million.

Earlier, PM also opened Musa Pak Shaheed bridge and performed ground breaking of Virtual University (VU) campus and Urban Water Supply Scheme in Jalalpur Pirwala, a comparatively backward tehsil of Multan with a vision to provide all basic facilities to the people there.

The 600 metre long Musa Pak Shaheed bridge over Sutlej River was a long standing demand of the people of the area. It has completed at a cost of Rs 1616 million and it is believed that it will reduce the travelling distance between Multan and Taranda Muhammad Panah by 40 kilometres.

The four-lane bridge (dual carriageway) has a 4.5 km long approach road and is 18 kilometres from Jalalpur Pirwala in the south.

The urban water supply scheme will be completed at a cost of Rs 109.372 million. It will provide clean drinking water to the people of an area where ground water is unfit for human consumption. The scheme would benefit about 55000 people living in various urban settlements of Jalalpur Pirwala.

Gilani also performed the ground breaking of campus of Virtual University in the city. The project will be completed at a cost of Rs 35 million.

The VU campus will provide distance cum online learning facility to the students with the aim to improve their education and skills.
