RAWALPINDI Adnan A. Khawaja, a former managing director of OGDCL who was arrested and sent to Adiyala jail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, was released within 24 hours on Wednesday.
The apex court had ordered the National Accountability Bureau to arrest Mr Khawaja and former head of Intelligence Bureau Brig (retd) Imtiaz Ahmed.
Mr Khawaja was released from jail at 10pm after the apex court accepted his bail against two surety bonds of Rs500,000 each. One was submitted by his wife and the other one by Amir Mansoor.
The Superintendent of Adiyala Jail, Saeedullah Gondle, confirmed the release of Mr Khawaja and said although the apex court had ordered submission of fresh surety bonds within three days, they did it on Wednesday.
Mr Khawaja and Brig Imtiaz were taken into custody by Islamabad police after a three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Tariq Pervez rejected Mr Khawaja's bail plea and ordered the NAB to take the two into custody.
The apex court also ordered Mr Khawaja to submit a fresh surety bond within three days to the Supreme Court.
The bench directed Brig (retd) Imtiaz to submit the surety bond to the Lahore High Court within three days.
