MUZAFFARABAD, May 19: Indian forces resumed shelling in different areas of Azad Kashmir on Sunday, killing four persons and injuring 13 others, officials said.

Besides, one injured of Saturday’s shelling died on Sunday, raising the death toll in two days to 10, they added.

The deputy commissioner of Bhimbher, Fayyaz Ali Abbasi, told Dawn by telephone that the enemy troops, using small and heavy weapons, had targeted the Chamb sector early Sunday for many hours.

Hamida, wife of Malik Hussain, died in Manawar village, and Basharat, Arshad, Zahid, Jehangir and Altaf were injured in Manawar and Gohsra villages, he said.

The Indian troops resumed heavy shelling in the Samahni sector of the same district at 8pm, and targeted the civilian population, Mirpur Commissioner Sardar Mohammad Khurshid told this correspondent.

He said three people died and eight others were injured in different villages of the Samahni sector.

The dead were identified as Waqas, Nasir and Khalid, and the injured were identified as Ghulam Hussain, Mohammad Khan, Mohammad Irshad, Rukhsar, Allah Ditta, Ramzan Shah, Yaqoob Siddiqi, and Kamran.

Earlier, Mashkoor, son of Rafiuallah, who was injured in Shahkot village in the lower belt of the Neelum Valley on Saturday, died in Muzaffarabad on Sunday.

The 20-year-old youth and two other seriously injured persons were brought here by an army helicopter as the main Neelum Valley is vulnerable to Indian firing and closed for vehicular traffic. But, he died on way to the Combined Military Hospital.

The deputy commissioner of Muzaffarabad, Dr Mahmoodul Hassan Raja, told Dawn that the Indian troops had also targeted Cham Doba area in the Chakothi sector, some 60km from here, early Sunday, but no casualty was reported from there.

According to officials, 54 people have been injured in two days in different sectors.

Talking to this correspondent from Islamabad, a military spokesman said that India had also carried out shelling along the Working Boundary by no casualties was reported.
