KARACHI, Dec 2: Bangladesh has sought assistance from National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) in developing Seafarer’s Identity Document (SID) in line with those being presently used by Pakistani seafarers the world over.

The Bangladesh’s director general department of shipping had approached DG Ports and Shipping Capt Anwar Shah and sought assistance in making foolproof SID for the Bangladeshi seafarers.

NADRA has informed the Bangladeshi shipping department that the SID system has been designed under the guidelines of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Geneva Convention 185, and the database authority also has the privilege of producing high security driving licences both in English and Bengali for the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh.

NADRA has been included in the top 50 companies of the world for secure identity documents and among only 16 system integrators in the world for such technology for the last two years.

The authority also assured that a cutting edge technology would be used for making seafarer’s identity documents for Bangladesh.

However, NADRA has sought more information with regard to initial volume of SID cards, regular or renewal volumes and number of centres to be established for issuance of SID cards.

It has suggested to the Bangladeshi authorities for procuring hardware from their local market but other facilities such as system integration, provision of software, training and commissioning of the system would be carried out by NADRA.
