BAJAUR: A woman was wounded when a mortar shell fired from Afghanistan’s Kunar province landed in a bordering locality of Mamond tehsil here on Tuesday.

Residents and officials said the shell flattened the house of Latifullah in Kaga area. They said a 22-year-old woman was seriously injured in the attack.

They added that a number of cattle were also killed.

The villagers said the people of nearby houses rushed to the spot soon after the attack and launched rescue work. They said security forces also quickly responded to the attack and targeted the militants’ hideouts with heavy fire. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

However, officials and local residents believed that militants living inside in the Afghanistan’s Kunar province could be responsible for the attack.

It was the third such attack carried out from the Afghanistan’s Kunar province since May 27 this year.

Meanwhile, elders of Tharkani and Utmankhel tribes condemned the attack, terming it an attempt to disturb peace in the district.

The elders asked the Afghanistan government to immediately stop such attacks carried out from its land.
