Veteran batsman Salman Butt is set to replace injured Mohammad Hafeez in the Lahore Qalandars squad for the remainder of the 2019 Pakistan Super League (PSL), the organisers announced on Tuesday.

Qalandars captain Hafeez was ruled out of the tournament after he fractured his thumb during the match against Karachi Kings on February 16.

As per the regulations of the PSL, the Qalandars had requested the 'Event Technical Committee' to replace Hafeez with Butt, which was approved.

"It was unfortunate to lose Hafeez. We believe that only an experienced Pakistani player like Salman Butt can replace him," said Lahore's coach Aqib Javed.

Butt has been in the player draft for the past three years and comes into the tournament as a 'Silver Category' player, read the post shared by PSL on their website.

"Salman [Butt] is a good addition to [the] squad. He was available in the past and has been in good form. We believe that he deserve a chance to showcase his form at this level as well," said Qalandars' team manager Sameen Rana.

Lahore Qalandars defeated the Karachi Kings on Feb 16 while they lost the two other matches — against Peshawar Zalmi and the series opener against Islamabad United — they have played in the series so far.

The Qalandars' next match will be against the Multan Sultans on Feb 22 in Sharjah.

Butt, in his prime, was the captain of the Pakistan national team before the infamous spot-fixing scandal of 2010 derailed his international career.
