RAWALPINDI: Inspector General of Prisons Punjab Shahid Saleem Baig has formed a committee to investigate how photographs were taken of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif and others in the office of the Central Jail Adiala superintendent prior to Sharif’s release.

Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and his son-in-law retired Capt Mohammad Safdar were released on Wednesday, on orders from the Islamabad High Court.

Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted within the prison facility.

The committee, which consists of Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Multan Region Malik Shaukat and the superintendent of Multan jail, will be investigating who managed to bring a camera or phone into the office of jail superintendent Saeedullah Gondal.

It will begin working on today (Friday) to determine who was responsible for the photographs, and submit its report within three days.

Two photographs released on social media show Sharif with Mr Sharif, former adviser to the prime minister on aviation Sardar Mehtab Khan, Murtaza Javed Abbasi and Raheel Munir.

Another photograph shows imprisoned PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi sitting beside Sharif in the jail superintendent’s office.

The deputy inspector general of prisons Rawalpindi region can be seen sitting in the jail superintendent’s chair and speaking to both politicians.

Mr Baig confirmed that a two-member committee has been consisted to look into the incident, which will submit its report within three days and begin work on Friday.

The committee will interview Mr Gondal and other jail staffers, as well as view CCTV footage of the visitors.
