Upstander

Noun

Definition: A person who speaks or acts in support of an individual or cause, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being attacked or bullied:

Examples: “Encourage your daughter to be an upstander, not a bystander!”

“Reading an upstander’s story encourages one to face the challenges on his own.”

“She also comes to understand the importance of being an upstander, and speaks up for her friend —and for what’s right.”

Origin: Mid 17th century (in the sense ‘a person who stands’): the current sense was coined in 2002 by the Irish-American diplomat Samantha Power after bystander, probably from stand up for.
