LAHORE: A 22-year-old woman was clubbed to death allegedly by her father-in-law in Raiwind on Monday.

Police said Iram alias Sobia, of Shahdara, had contracted court marriage with Muhammad Shahbaz of Ameenpura village a month ago.

They said Shahbaz took his wife to his parents’ house where his father Shehzad did not allow the couple to stay.

Police said Shehzad was annoyed with his son for marrying against the will of the family and wanted him to divorce his wife. Police said the couple, who worked in a factory in Sunder Industrial Estate, started living at a rented flat.

On Monday morning, Shahbaz dropped Iram at his parents and went to his workplace. The woman asked for the belongings of her husband from the parents of Shahbaz, police said and added her father-in-law got enraged and started beating her.

Iram suffered critical injuries to her head and fell unconscious. The neighbours took her to hospital where doctors pronounced her dead due to excessive bleeding.

Police have removed the body to morgue for autopsy, collected forensic evidence and recorded statements of the eyewitnesses.

Police have registered a case against suspect Shehzad on the complaint of victim’s mother Rubina.

Investigating Officer SI Saifullah told Dawn that police had arrested the suspect who confessed to his crime.
