SWABI: A man allegedly threw acid on his wife, badly damaging her abdomen and lower part of the body. The estranged woman was recently brought back to her husband’s house by a local jirga, said police here on Sunday. However, they didn’t know the cause of the incident.

The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Kalu Khan police station, and the couple belongs to Ismalia village. The acid attack victim received 50 per cent burns and was shifted to Civil Hospital Kalu Khan where police recorded her statement. Later, she was shifted to one of the hospitals in Mardan.

It was reportedly the first incident of its kind in the district, said police and health officials.

Police officials said the man supported by his mother indulged in the heinous crime of throwing acid on her wife. The couple had been married for four years, but didn’t have a child.

Knowing about the incident, mother of the victim reached the Kalu Khan police station for registration of an FIR.

It was learnt that at the time of the incident the woman was alone in the house.

The accused, who fled the scene after committing the crime, was later arrested from the suburbs of the village, police said.

Officials said the victim remained in her parents’ house for long after the couple developed differences. However, they said they did not know what the differences were.

However, local people told police the couple frequently clashed with each other.

The police officials said the attack was aimed at inflicting physical and mental pain on the woman by her husband.

Meanwhile, a man identified as Mohammad Usman belonging to Rawalpindi drowned in the Gohati Canal when his motorcycle skidded of the road and fell into it on Sunday.

The deceased along with a colleague was on way to Charbagh village. The accident occurred near the postgraduate college. The body of the deceased was recovered later, however, his colleague was saved alive by local divers.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner imposed section 144 on pillion-riding till the completing of the anti-polio vaccination in the district.
