KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should involve ex-cricketers in its administrative affairs, former captain Javed Miandad said on Thursday.
“Otherwise, the Pakistan cricket team will keep putting up disastrous displays on the field,” Miandad told DawnNews, adding that the main reason for Pakistan’s failure in ODI cricket was due to poor domestic structure.
He said the “structural development can only be guaranteed when it’s being supervised by former cricketers”.
Pakistan faced a 169-run defeat against England on Tuesday after getting spanked for a record-breaking 444-run total by the host in the third ODI of the on-going five-match series between the two sides.
Azhar Ali and company failed to contain the England batsmen from piling up a big total and later could not put up a decent fight in their second innings chase.
Miandad also questioned Azhar’s credibility as the Pakistan skipper. “How can players, whose place in the side is debatable, can be the captain?” he said.
He also called upon the PCB to review complete setup of the national side including the captaincy.
Miandad, who had previously been associated with the board as its director general, said the PCB have failed to find the right replacement for Misbah-ul-Haq, who continues to lead the side in Tests.

@Sheraz I think you are living in fools paradise, result is obvious its 5-0 nil in ODIs and 1-o n T20, as it is only one T20. Soon the test ranking will be languishing at the bottom with this limited talent, especially in batting, these guys are even poorer in batting talent than Zimbabwe. Now, we have to just pray, remaining defeats should be less embarrassing. Even Bangladesh has better batting talent.

Agree with Mr Shizraz to the extent that major changes in the team structure during an ongoing series can be more damaging-obviously pressure on the management and team members need to be firmly applied to perform better. However, what Javed Miandad is dwelling on is a fundamental issue. For how long the PCB will be headed by Sethis and Sharyars?????

Dear Javed Bhai, please also elaborate on how the non-cricketing administrators are able to produce first ranked Test team but failed to produce a good ODI team. Sir, please avoid unreasonable arguments and use your cricketing experience to provide the Board with a logical clue on how to improve the current ODI team.

JM has always been my favourite player but I disagree when he says "Misbahs replacement etc.". Infact Azhar is like Misbah thats why Misbah recommended him to replace him! I will narrate with below facts:
1. In 2011 Pak played WC SemiFinal under SAfridi and were at #4 ICC Ranking when Afridi was removed and ironically replaced with The Man whos slow batting resulted in our loss to India in semi finals i.e. Misbah!
2. Between 2011 and 2015 Pak ODI position started slipping downwards under Misbah who inorder to accomodate his old croonie Hafeez at #3 ousted Younis Khan from ODIz
3. Pre-empting a dusastrous ending Misbah announced his retirement from ODIz well b4 Tge WC 2015 and as expectef Pak was ousted b4 the semi final stage!
4. Resultantly Misbah keft Pak ODI Team at #8 in rankings and ensured that he gets an impotent, incompetent and limited talented man in Azhar Ali appointed as Captain who will further deterorate the performance as he never had a future as a ODI player!

Last but not the least, for those arguing Misbahs case pointing towards our Test #1 ranking let me clarify that theoughout Misbahs stint as Captain Pak has played ALL CRICKET in UAE and SL BANG except for 2 series i.e. Versus South Africa with 3-0 Defeat and the recent ENG Series with 2-2. Younis Khan contributed heavily in Misbahs success as Captain in Tests with 16 centuries out if his todate 32 since Test Match1976 i.e. Misbahs first as Captain!!!!!

@ABL : There are a lot of variables involved in the test ranking. We are lucky that ranking points are based on 3-4 years worth of cricket, not just current year performance, otherwise we would be in the middle of the table. The top ranking is because Misbah has led the team proactively and we have good Home record in UAE. At the same time, ODIs record for Azhar Ali is extremely poor and the win/loss ratio explains that. Azhar is a good play, not a good captain. There are also far too many experiments done with ODI and T20 side and due to nepotism and selection issues, we have ended up losing games that we should have won. the board is ultimately responsible for the results and the current stats don't look good.

But Mr. Miandad, you were previously involved in running the affairs of PCB and that too at a pretty high level. I can't recall any significant contributions you made to PCB or the Cricket team beside generating controversies. Let's face it; Not every famous cricketer is cut out to be a good administrator.

We still seem to have Shahid Afridi fans the likes of whom have caused more damage to the younger generation's way of playing the game. We need to just take a step back and see how new boys can be taught to be mature, responsible, not spontaneous at the rush of blood and above all not one in a fifty match wonders.

To start with there is a serious leadership deficit in the team. The same team, under Misbah would do wonders. This is so obvious from day 1 but once the captain's appointment made the attitude is we will back you all the way to the dust. So we are now in the dust. But seems further rubbing is required before the selection committee at PCB will wake up. Secondly, the attitude of non-serious play is definitely not helping. Pride is lacking and so is the effort. Playing every ball on its merit is something we do not believe in. Sad to see short game cricket demise in Pakistan.

JM selection wrong Hafeez , Malik, worse and not ODI or T20 players above all Captain from Sui Gas Mafia Tuk Tuk recommendation, nominated non cricketer Chairman Sharyar. Azhar ali dropped in 2013 never pick for till 2015 w/c, suddenly he become captain even he have no place, unfortunately Misbah given us his legacy, we suffered and will continue to suffered if Azhar will not resign or remove from ODI.

What ever is current status of cricket in Pakistan it is because of ex-cricketers, when they were playing and when they were in board, just to remind Mr. Miandad in his captaincy Pak toured Eng in 1992 lost one-day series 4-1, lost to N.Z 2-1, lost 6 out 8 of matches in World Series in Australia (Pak, Aus, W.I), could manage to win only one match in that tour of Australia.
Eng scored 363 against Pak in 1992, yes in 1992, and Pak was all out for mere 43 against W.I. in 1993.
So if any one is saying this is Pak's worst performance in ODI's, sorry sir i beg to differ.

@Kabir : you are living in the past and you need to come into 20th century, instead of looking for excuses we need to look for solution and that is exactly what is wrong with us as we tend to find excuses to feel good about ourselves because India was in the similar condition but look at them where they are now. They have moved on to bigger and better things and it is time to look for the future but our biggest problem is our own government who needs to stop interfering in sports and stop giving these positions as favours to those who helped them get elected. Unless and until this is corrected we will continue to stay at the bottom in each and every department. It is quite simple but you go ahead and continue to look for excuses

Advice to PCB, The Domestic One Day and T20 games should be played with smaller boundaries to encourage bigger shot play by batsmen and also challenge bowlers to defend shorter boundaries. Pakistan players seemed lost on shorter grounds not knowing what to do . The present T20 cup is a good example, that consistent 200 plus scores and modern cricket is not flourishing to a maximum.

This was when Miandad was the coach. I do not know if anyone remembers Shoaib Akhter hitting the middle stump of Tendulkar in the test in Mumbai in front of capacity crowd. Yup! Miandad was the coach. In his time out of 23 ODI, Pakistan won 15 matches. Though not a great result but at least we were winning some matches. Look at us now.
