ISLAMABAD: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested three persons including its constable in connection with their involvement in organs trade, sources told Dawn on Saturday.

The agency has requested the capital police to hand over an inspector, who was also involved in the illegal business.

He was on deputation in FIA when the crime took place and was repatriated to his parent department, the sources said.

In March, Waqar Khan, a resident of Tench Bhatta in Rawalpindi, told Dawn that he sold a part of his liver a year ago to a patient in India for Rs 800,000 and was now receiving threats for demanding the amount from the agents.

He told Dawn: “I neither visited any passport office nor an embassy but got a passport along with a visa to travel to India.”

The chairman, Senate Standing Committee on Interior, Rehman Malik, also invited Mr Waqar to a committee meeting where he narrated his story in front of the members.

In response, Senator Malik asked interior ministry to take action over the issue and bring the gang to justice. He also asked to submit a report with the committee within two weeks.

The ministry gave the case to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the FIA, who after hearing Mr Waqar and getting evidence from him, registered a case, the sources stated.

“In the FIR, the gang’s members including two officials of the FIA, a constable and the inspector, were nominated,” the officer said, adding, “Today, with the arrest of two main members of the gang, the number rose to three, as constable had already been in the custody of the agency.”

The inspector would be arrested soon, the sources said.

“The SIU investigators were tracing other members of the gang who helped the main culprits in making the passport and getting the visa of the neighbouring country,” they added.

Deputy Director FIA Nawazul Haq, confirmed to Dawn that they had arrested three people, and step were underway to apprehend the capital police inspector.

However, he did not give further details about the case.
