ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Senate standing committee on interior Rehman Malik has requested the secretary general of the International Criminal Police Organisation / International Police to look into the issue of Panama leaks, and fix the responsibility of money-laundering on the facilitators, Dawn has learnt.

Mr Malik also called for constitution of an investigation committee of Interpol for necessary action against the Panama government for providing this facility, besides making international legislation over the practice.

The letter said the necessary action should have taken by UNO / Interpol against the government of Panama which had been allowing the parking of illegal proceeds and providing parking of such funds to the money launderers, which had now been detected and had some in the public domain.

It warranted action by the secretary general of Interpol for allowing facilitation and parking of billions of dollars in Panama, it added.

“As secretary general Interpol it is your divine duty to look into the whole affair of Panama leaks and fix the responsibility of money-laundering of the facilitators. I therefore propose to constitute a high level investigative committee of Interpol with the help of some member states for necessary action against the Panama government for providing this facility.

“I also propose to advise the secretary general UNO to bring the international legislation to totally ban the tax heavens operating anywhere in the world to leave no room for the money-laundering and terrorism financing,” Mr Malik added.
