Pro-Qadri protesters block Karachi roads, cause traffic jam

KARACHI: Several small and big protest demonstrations against the hanging of Mumtaz Qadri caused a massive traffic jam on city's roads including the busiest thoroughfare Shahrah-e-Faisal on Monday evening.

The protesters chanted slogans against the government and judiciary, they blocked different roads for several hour which caused traffic gridlocks at Shahrah-e-Faisal, Soldier Bazar and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road.

Mumtaz Qadri, an Elite Force commando convicted of killing former Punjab governor Salman Taseer, was executed at the Adiala Jail in the wee hours on Monday. Angry supporters of the convict took to the streets forcing shops and businesses to close and public transport to disappear making a strike-like situation in certain areas of Karachi.

Motorists and commuters in public transport vehicles remained stuck for hours while some took to social media to express their anger.

Pillion riding banned in Karachi

Sindh government has announced to place a ban on pillion riding in Karachi for four days, from March 1 to 4, citing security reasons.

The provincial home department issued a notification in this regard on the advice of police authorities banning pillion-riding in the metropolis till March 4 due to security threats.

The ban shall not be applicable to women, children below 12 years of age, senior citizens, journalists, and security personnel.
