LAHORE: A 15-year old rape survivor who was assaulted by at least eight men in a hotel on Mall Road attempted suicide after continuous pressure from police and prosecution, her family said Saturday.
The victim's brother-in-law told Dawn that the family was about to go to sleep at night when she jumped from the terrace. She injured herself and was rushed to the Services Hospital. She is now back at home recovering.
He said she had been under duress from the police interrogations, where officials harassed her with "all kinds of questions".
"She's a child," her brother-in-law said. "You can imagine what kind of questions they ask."
The victim's sister earlier told Dawn that police were pressuring their family to exclude the name of main suspect Adnan from the FIR. She said police started action against the suspects after some TV channels aired the news and appealed to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for justice.
The teenage girl, an 8th grade student, had earlier said that a PML-N youth wing member and his accomplices kidnapped her from Multan Road and forced her to drink some intoxicated liquid after which she lost consciousness.
This was followed by a text message that was received on the girl's mother's mobile phone around 11pm last Friday. The text said: “Your daughter is lying unconscious in room number 230 of a hotel on The Mall.” She said the family found the girl lying unconscious in the hotel room when they reached there along with police.
Racecourse police recovered the girl from the hotel room and shifted her to Services Hospital where reports of initial medical tests revealed she had been assaulted.
On the complaint of the survivor's mother, the police registered a case against suspects six men and the PML-N member.
DNA tests of the eight men and the survivor were conducted by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency.
The FIR was initially registered against the suspects under Sections 376 and 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Police also added abduction to the list of charges against the eight accused.
All eight suspects were arrested on Saturday and Sunday, along with the hotel manager. The hotel facility has since been sealed.

Well , anticipating any embarrassing situation i had to bargain 500 rupees in the end and got rid of them . may God save all Pakistanis from Punjab gullu buts.

As a custom. Unless the Chief Minister Punjab or the Chief Justice intervenes. There is less hope that the child girl would get justice. The FIR would be spoiled to an extent to give leverage to the accused. Thus making it easy for them to get scott free or with minor punishment from the court.

Casualty medical officer or MO on duty or Medicolegal expert initiates the process. Police transports it. Then medcolegal team in the lab in Lahore handles it.
Samples can be taken from normal persons, samples can be changed, reports can be fake.
Doctors community is part of parcel of the corrupt system.
I can write a book on my observations and experiences. You would not believe them.
I was not fit there and left to work in another country.
We doctors, many of us are part the same corrupt system and unimaginable things. I can quote many many first hand experiences, if you want, where mysel or my friends were involved

The lack of response from individuals in high places is mind-boggling.
And where we do get a response, it is usually negative and along the lines of 'why are you trying to raise awareness of this'.
Before you and others start pointing fingers at NGOs and politicians; ask yourselves what you are doing yourself to address this huge problem. The answer is probably 'nothing', because most people consider this to be someone else's problem.

Its time that CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif must take more then a 'Notice",as one accused is said to be office bearer of PML(N) youth wing. All the accused must be tried and exemplary punishment be awarded.

This is happening again and again and all too familiar story, reason is that our society is has this indifferent attitude towards such crimes. In a normal world, we would prosecute such crimes with vigor and speed and bring culprits to justice speedily, the high courts and supreme courts would act speedily and decide this in days not weeks. But alas no one cares any more, all those who think we are Muslims and we are a great nations, please take second look in the mirror. We must be ashamed of ourselves, any country and society which can not protect the weak in it's folds deserve to be annihilated, and does not deserve to live honorably among the nations of the world. We are hypocrites of the worst kind and surely God's punishment will be set upon us. It is not the new year celebrations or saying merry Christmas which sets the earth quakes, this is the Earth Quake, our failures to protect the weak and provide the justice is the final nail in the coffins of this nation.

Our nation and country is doomed, I am ashamed that I come from this city. when we fail to act swiftly and brings culprits of such heinous crimes to swift justice, we all become the hypocrites of the worst kind. It is not saying merry Christmas or celebrating new year which will bring our doom, it is this indifference and our inability to protect the weak which we will destroy our society and nation.

The victim is from ordinary family while the gang of men committing crime are from influential family. Lets see how long the police survives the political pressure and pursue the case in right direction.

If victim's samples were not taken at the time (soon after the heinous rape), secured, promptly sent to the Punjab Forensic Lab in Lahore for analysis, then the vital DNA evidence would be lost (or has been lost already). If that turns out to be the case, then IG of Punjab Police should be arrested and tried for abetment of rape and for supporting the criminals.It was Police's responsibility to obtain and set the DNA evidence analysed promptly and if they did not do that, then Police heads should toll

There is that rate list too, i.e. killed in road accident = 250000, serious injury = 150000, I wonder how much for a innocent child who was raped?
Maybe a government job for her brother or father??

Police refuse FIRs as this adds up to the crime list and more work. Besides, its easier to subdue the weak.

This case has been transferred to SP Umar Virk . The day it was transferred it s fate became clear. The modus operandi of Virk is that 1st he will assess the pressure then take side of effected party and once case become old or media pressure and attention is subdued he through his other goondaas will start pressurising victims to take the case back.
Same thing happened in Zain murder case and many more.
Even for future just watch his entry in the case and the outcome.

@Mansoor Sajid Police take oath to protect the citizens and they should do just that. As far as political pressure is concerned Police can forward the case to FIA who are not under the CM or can fulfill the oath they take. If we make police independent then they will form a even bigger gangster group since 99.99% of police force are political appointments.

Forensic Nursing & a non-corrupt police are the need of the hour. All such sexual assault (previously termed as rape) victims & also accused need to be examined by a proper Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (S.A.N.E) preferably a female, who can take specimens and ask other questions, try and photograph affected parts of body for bruises, cuts, laceration, bite marks (with victim's consent), collect pubic hair, clothing, buccal / vaginal swabs, well before evidence is washed off due to shower or destroyed with passage of time. Male spermatozoa would still be present in female body even after several hours of coitus. The state of the art forensic lab in Lahore, PFSA, they should be able to link the suspects to the victim or the scene of crime. Forensic's duty is fact finding, police's duty is fault finding. I agree, the entire chain of custody can be compromised because of the flawed system and reports can be changed using bribe / political pressures. It is unfortunate...but it is true.

PML-N will fall prey to its own dumb policies of nepotism and racism. They have this policy of dont touch punjab or Lahore as that's there vote base. but what they dont realize is that keeping an blind eye to these criminals will build a society of looters and thugs which will destroy punjab and other parts of pakistan. punjab has become an epi center of terrorism and criminal elements.
