Employers were 26pc less likely to express interest in job applicants with a disability than in those without one, according to a study by researchers at Rutgers and Syracuse universities. The researchers created three different cover letters for fictional job candidates with different levels of experience. One letter disclosed a spinal cord injury, one disclosed having Asperger’s syndrome and one disclosed no disability. They found that employers were significantly less likely to show interest in applicants with disabilities, and that this effect was strongest among candidates with considerable work experience.
