MUMBAI: The 16-year-old son of Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar is on the road to forging his own career as a top-flight cricketer after being selected as an all-rounder for Mumbai's youth team.

After scoring a century and taking four wickets in a trial tournament, Arjun Tendulkar was on Thursday named in the 15-strong squad to represent Mumbai in India's main under-16 competition, the Vijay Merchant Trophy.

"He did well in the selection trials... The selectors have picked him as an all-rounder," Mumbai Cricket Association joint secretary PV Shetty told the Indian Express.

Arjun's father also began his career in Mumbai's junior team before being picked for the senior side at the age of 15, scoring an unbeaten century on his debut in the Ranji Trophy, Indian cricket's inter-state championship.

He won his first cap for India a year later before going on to become the highest scorer in the history of Test cricket as well as the first player to score 100 international centuries. He retired in 2013.
