KARACHI: At least six people were injured in a hand grenade attack in Lyari's Nayabad area of Karachi.

Area residents were collecting water at Shah Waliullah pumping station in Nayabad area of Lyari when two motorcycle-riding attackers entered the pumping station premises and hurled a hand-grenade.

The grenade exploded with a huge bang injuring at least six people present at the scene. The attackers managed to escape after the incident.

Security and emergency teams reached the site. Rescue personnel shifted the victims to Civil Hospital for treatment.

Police sources told DawnNews that the attack might have been in connection with Local Government elections scheduled to be held in the area on December 5. The sources said that a similar attack had taken place in the area a day earlier.

Rescue sources said that no serious injuries were reported as a result of the attack.

Lyari is one of the poorest and most violent neighbourhoods of Karachi where clashes between rival gangs linked to political and ethnic groups have erupted continuously in the past.
