LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan has said that three new universities will be established in Punjab during the current financial year.

Presiding over a departmental meeting on Thursday, he said the universities would be set up in Jhang, Sahiwal and Okara at a cost of Rs1.32 billion, says a handout.

Secretary Higher Education Irfan Ali and other officers attended the meeting.

Mashhood said the chief minister had diverted resources to education sector for bringing about a revolution in the province. He said under this policy, new universities and colleges were being set up speedily in the province.

He said an Act for the three universities had been drafted.

He said the Sahiwal university would cost Rs270 million, Jhang university Rs350m and Okara varsity Rs700m.

Rana Mashhood said the Punjab government had set up 138 new colleges so far and 37 buses had also been purchased for the transportation of male and female students of colleges.

He said computer labs had been established in 31 colleges for the promotion of computer education.

The minister said owing to steps of the chief minister, Punjab had made a tremendous progress in education.
