TAXILA: The Khanpur dam authorities on Thursday again opened the reservoir’s spillway to flush out surplus water and create space for fresh inflow as water level reached the dangerous level.

It was the second time during this week that the spillway was opened to release the extra water.

Sources said due to the monsoon rains in the catchment areas, the Khanpur dam got filled to its maximum conservation level of 1,982 feet on Thursday morning.

The sources said the dam authorities would discharge one-and-a-half-foot of water during many hours operation bringing it down to the level of 1,980 feet. The dam authorities released 68,000 cusecs surplus water reducing the level by three feet.

Three drowned: Three people drowned in different incidents in various localities in Khanpur.

Raja Khizar drowned while taking a bath near a water channel while two other people were swept away while crossing the Haro River. Only two of the bodies could be recovered.
