ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police chief has ordered a survey to determine the manpower strength of the 22 police stations in the capital.

On the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tahir Alam Khan, trainee assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) have been given the task to carry out the survey, officials in the department told Dawn.

There are 22 police stations in the capital which are being operated with the total strength of 1,517 personnel.

In 2000, there were only 10 police stations – Aabpara, Kohsar, Bhara Kahu, Secretariat, Sihala, Industrial Area, Margalla, Golra, Tarnol and Women. The then senior superintendent of police Nasir Khan Durrani got approved the strength of manpower for each police station.

The strength was sanctioned after a survey and keeping in view the need for the policemen to maintain peace and protect the lives and property of the citizens.

At present, capital has 22 police stations with the total strength of 1,517 personnel

During the last 15 years, however, the number of police stations increased to 22. However, the sanctioned strength of the police remained unchanged.

In 2000, the manpower strength sanctioned for the Aabpara police station was 190, for Kohsar 200, Bhara Kahu 103, Secretariat 101, Sihala 102, Industrial Area 175, Margalla 189, Tarnol 102, Shalimar 170 and Women 66. But these police stations worked with their sanctioned strength only for two to three years.

Later, personnel were drawn from the police stations and used on other assignments besides deploying them at the newly-opened police stations.

At present, the Aapara police station has 95 personnel, Kohsar 126, Bhara Kahu 82, Secretariat 92, Sihala 64, Industrial Area 127, Margalla 78, Tarnol 81 and Shalimar 80.

Since 2004, as many as 12 new police stations were established in the capital. But the strength of the police remained the same.

The 12 new police stations along with their personnel are: Shahzad Town 53, Khana 34, Kural 61, Loi Bher 63, Nilor 44, Banigala 51, Karachi Company 43, Golra 113, Ramna 104, Sabzi Mandi 95, Shams Colony 28 and Noon 56.
