Peshawar SKMCH to open in Dec: Imran

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital (SKMCH) in Peshawar will be opened in December this year.

He said the hospitals in Lahore and Peshawar were a tribute to the generosity of Pakistanis. Speaking at the second Iftar dinner at SKMCH in Lahore on Sunday, Imran, who was accompanied by his wife Reham Khan, said Pakistanis had established the hospital in Lahore and ran it successfully, adding so shall be the case in Peshawar.

A hospital official told Dawn that some Rs95 million had been collected at the fundraiser dinner. He also said at a dinner on the first of Ramazan, the hospital had collected Rs75 million. The fundraising was attended by a large number of philanthropists, who expressed confidence in its transparent utilisation.

Though commendable contribution made by IK but medical healthcare is the responsibility of the state. Since pti is in power in kpk, IK should also direct his government to establish new hospitals and upgrade the existing one rather collect money himself to extend the chain of his own hospitals.

When KPK Govt. is run by PTI why they are not strengthening the system and infrastructure and fix Govt. hospital and open a cancer treatment section there ? Why private hospital ?

@Khan-Haqiqi The SKMCH Peshawar project was started before PTI came to power in KPK, so made sense to complete it. Now that they are in power, yes agree they should be focussing improving the public infrastructure including hospitals and schools.

@Khan-Haqiqi because it's not a beneficial option to run cancer treatment on tax money. Cannot allot major share only on cancer treatment, thus tax money is divided for other health treatments. In a country which does not pay taxes, it would be extremely ludicrous and unfair. Due to the high cost of cancer care and expansion projects Shakuat Khanum has a challenging budget of Rs. 6.8 Billion - where 75% of the patients are financially supported. Try to understand how difficult task it is to collect around 7 Billion each year, not for himself but for the poor people. Keep aside your hatred for IK, and think positively. There is a reason each year he receives such huge donations each year - his honesty. Try to appreciate that.

@Khan-Haqiqi First of all KPK government is not a kingdom of PTI, and who knows who will rule KPK in next government, so you can't leave a hospital at the mercy of some corrupt parties. Secondly, it is not a private hospital that make money for an individual rather it is a non-profitable charity hospital run by people donations for poor people.

@Khan-Haqiqi KP govt is running a cancer treatment program but SKMH is in a league of its own. It's not using up KP govt resources so I don't see what the problem is. As for reform of KP hospitals, KP only govt to bring in new set of legislation and given autonomy to big hospitals with credible board of governors and professionals to manage affairs. In time, this will bear fruit...

Actions are based on intention. If he is sincere and not showing off he will get the reward. He runs a charity based hospital and on the other hand he is a controversial politician with habit of bluntly attacking people's integrity if they disagree with him. Coming under tremendous pressure after the concocted puncture story got exposed his own integrity has suffered a serious blow.

@KHAN-HAQIQI, the government of KP has already opened a fee cancer treatment facility at the Department of Oncology at Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar which was inaugurated by the Health Minister, Govt of KP and it is the first of its kind in the province of KP where poor patients are treated free of cost.

Don't malign effort of someone i guess its easy for you to ask this question but families who are facing this must ask from them . I never forget the lady who was crying in Geo TV program "Bachay Man K Sachay" in front of Khan Sb and want to kiss his toe because her son got free treatment in SKMH Lahore

@Hamid- Pakistan Dr burki, the person who also has been the in charge of SKMCH lahore is now working with kp govt to improve basic structure of kp hospitals but still they won't be like SKMCH because, as another friends said here, provincial govt doesn't have enough funds..

As a philanthropist and social activist Imran Khan is doing a great job. We have to appreciate and support him in his cause. But i really get depressed and disappointed when as a politician is see him surrounded by turncoats and opportunists. ONLY if he can get rid of the turncoats and opportunists around him and give Pakistan an honest and able leadership, he could change Pakistan. Now he should emerge as positive, mature and polished statesman. He should fight for the principles and not just for the power alone. I hope IK avoid ball tempering and hitting others below the belt because in this world no one is perfect.

@Khan-Haqiqi Its a two sided picture. It needs funds. The money he is collecting is not tax which can be used in general hospitals. The other side is that he can earn in SKMCH from rich people.

Khan suffered humiliation in karachi fund raising dinner he failed to collect even half of what he collected from lahore keeping in mind karachi is the biggest city of pakistan. karachi refused to give him votes also refused to give him funds now

@Khwaja, Do you think IK has a magic wand to make hospitals. It takes a lot of planning and funds to go for a hospital. It also requires daring guts and a loads of patience to take the task of making a hospital.

To all the fans of IK its system which we need to strengthen not personality as when IK is not there who will collect donations than? Yes he did a commendable job but he needs to strengthen the system so that when he is not there it keeps on going, if PTI did good job at KPK than why people vote for corrupt politicians?
