PESHAWAR: An alleged attacker was killed in exchange of fire with police following an attack on the vehicle of Faqir Abad police station SHO late on Monday, police said.

An official at the police station said the incident took place near Ring Road at around midnight when four armed persons opened fire on the vehicle of SHO Diyar Khan, while he was on a routine patrol in the area.

Police personnel retaliated, killing one of the attackers, while his three other accomplices managed to escape. Police personnel remained unhurt in the encounter.

The official said later police cordoned off the area and conducted a search operation. However, no arrests were made. Police took the attacker’s body in custody and shifted it to Khyber Medical College for forensic investigations. ASP Faqir Abad Furqan Bilal told Dawn the attacker was in his 30s; however, police had so far not been able to identify him.

Mr Bilal said the investigators were trying to identify him through fingerprints and pictures. He said it was not clear whether the attackers were robbers or militants.
