KARACHI: Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Vice President Sherry Rehman on Monday was elected as senator from Sindh unopposed.

Last week, Rehman filed nomination papers for a general seat of the Senate from Sindh that had fallen vacant after the resignation of Abdul Latif Ansari who had been elected to the upper house of parliament in March on the PPP’s ticket.

According to PPP Spokesman Senator Farhatullah Babar, Mr Ansari has resigned so that Ms Rehman could replace him.

While speaking to media representatives, Rehman said that she will speak out for the people of Sindh in the House.

Only two nominations had been filed with Sindh Election Commissioner Tanveer Zaki. The other nomination papers were also of a PPP leader, Nadeem Bhutto, who was reportedly a covering candidate.

Ms Rehman went to file her papers along with a number of PPP ministers and leaders, led by Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah. The proposer and seconder of her nomination papers were Mahesh Kumar Malani, a PPP member of the Sindh Assembly from PS-61, and Abdul Karim Soomro from PS-54.

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah had said that Ms Rehman was an important leader of PPP and would effectively raise voice for the rights of Sindh after her election to the Senate.

A PPP source had said that Ms Rehman had served as Pakistan’s ambassador in the US and quit the office on May 15, 2013. According to rules, she was not eligible to become senator before a period of two years passed since she left the office.

The source said it was because of this reason that she kept away from the Senate elections held in March 2015.
