SWABI: Speakers at a youth convention here on Wednesday noted that increasing population and lack of education were major causes of violence in the society.

The convention was organised by the District Awaz Forum, a local NGO, and police officials, journalists, lawyers, members of various welfare bodies, youth and workers of political parties were in attendance. Mardan division DIG, Saeed Khan Wazir, was the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Saeed Wazir said that if population was kept under control then people would get required facilities and would not resort to committing social evils.

There was an urgent need to educate the citizens about the menace of increasing population, and that both religious figures and politicians could play role in doing so, he said. He stressed that proper education could prevent youth from falling into wrong hands.

Alamgir Khan, social welfare officer, said that education was key to women empowerment and curbing incidents of gender-based violence. He said that honour killing incidents occurred because of lack of education.

Sajjad Khan, district police officer, said peace was a prerequisite for progress and prosperity of the country, and that police and people could cooperate to achieve the objective.

Jehanzeb Salik, head of Salik Foundation, a local welfare body, said that dispute resolution council should vigorously pursue settlement of local disputes.

Rohal Amin, president of Samajee Behbood Rabita Council, said that economic woes led to an increase in violence in society.

Mohammad Sagheer, Swabi bar association general secretary, said that domestic violence led to break up of marriages, destroying the lives of both the male and female.
