TIMERGARA: Dozens of candidates on Friday submitted nomination papers for district councillor, tehsil councillor, general and peasant councillors, women and youth councillors for the local government polls.

Sources in the local election commission told Dawn that not only political workers of different parties but dozens of independent candidates submitted their nomination papers for different positions.

They said that there was huge rush of aspiring candidates in front of offices of different returning officers at Timergara, Chakdara, Lal Qila and Samar Bagh. According to sources, dozens of female political and social workers also submitted their nomination papers for women reserved seats from different parts of Lower Dir.

Election officer, Inayatur Rehman, said nomination papers would be scrutinised from April 20 to 25, while election symbols to the candidates would be allotted on May 5 and 6. The election, he said, would be held on May 30.

The JI has fielded Hakim Khan, Haji Shah Zaman and Qasim Khan for district council from Bandagai, Noorakhel and Shahikhel union councils, respectively.

The JUI-F allotted tickets to Muslim Khan, Fazal Khaliq and Mufti Khalid Mehmood from these union councils for the district council. The PPP’s Misal Khan submitted nomination papers for district council from Bandagai UC, and ANP’s Ghulam Rashid from Shahikhel UC. The JI and PTI have formed alliance in Adenzai tehsil. However, both the parties failed to form alliance in other parts of the district.

On the other hand, the tripartite alliance of PPP, ANP and JUI-F also has failed to reach a final decision in the district.

The JUI-F nominated candidate for the district council, Muslim Khan, told Dawn that talks among the leaders of PPP, JUI-F and ANP were in progress regarding fielding joint candidates.

CONTRABAND DESTROYED: The district police on Friday burnt a huge quantity of contraband seized during the last few months. SP investigation Rahatullah Khan and civil judge-II Hafiz Akbar Ali led a police party that publicly set contraband on fire at Timergara police lines.
