LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday sought a reply from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on a petition challenging the candidature of Prof Sajid Mir for Senate election.

Petitioner Qazi Husain Siraj stated that Prof Mir was contesting the election on PML-N ticket whereas he was emir of Markazi Jamaat-i-Ahle Hadith.

He said the respondent did not meet the criteria prescribed in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution for a member of the parliament.

The petitioner said Prof Mir, being head of an independent party, could not contest election on the ticket of any other party.

He asked the court to set aside the acceptance of the respondent’s nomination papers by the ECP. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday (today).

Jailed: An anti-terrorism court on Monday awarded five-year imprisonment to a man for distributing hate material in public.

Police arrested Muhammad Khalil red-handed when he was distributing the literature among the people.

The prosecution counsel stated that police also recovered the printed material in large quantity from the suspect’s custody.

The court jailed the suspect for five years and imposed a fine of Rs20,000 on him.

In another similar case, the court granted bail to two suspects -- Omar and Zulqarnain of Sheikhupura.

The court directed the suspects to furnish surety bonds of Rs200,000 each.
