Indian court acquits 70 accused in 2002 post-Godhra riots case

GUJARAT: A court in India’s Gujarat’s Banaskantha district acquitted on Friday 70 accused in the 2002 post-Godhra riots that took place in Seshan Nava village for lack of evidence, The Hindu reported.
A total of 14 Muslims were killed in the riots that broke out on March 2, 2002 while two Hindus were also killed in police firing.
Addition Sessions Judge V.K. Pujara acquitted the accused on the ground that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence on record to prove their involvement as part of the mob participating in killings.
“The eye-witnesses in the case turned hostile and the total 109 oral witnesses did not give names of the accused and did not support the complainant’s case,” additional public prosecutor D.V. Thakor told The Hindu.
Eight of the accused persons died during the course of the trial. Mr. Thakor said 12 supplementary charge sheets were filed in this case.
According to prosecution’s case, an armed mob of around 5,000 people laid siege to the village on March 2 in the aftermath of the Sabarmati Express train burning.
They killed 14 persons of the Baloch Muslim community, including children. Gujarat is the home state of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The state has a majority Hindu population and a history of religious conflict.
At least 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died in Gujarat in 2002 in violence between Hindus and Muslims. Modi was chief minister of the state at the time.

This crux of the matter says it all. A chief minister just can't stay silent on the matter for two days when all the damage and killings were done. He remained aloof and inactive during all this mayhem, so was in connivance with the killing 5000 plus mob.

The Indian government report released within days of the massacre had admitted over 2200 Muslims massacred. Up to last year the number bandied by Indian and Western media was 1100, now it is "at least 1000". Next year they would drop the prefix "at least" and in a couple years a prefix "nearly" would be added.

People commenting from Pakistan should aware of what exactly happened in Godhara. A train called sabarmathi express full of Hindu pilgrims were burnt alive in a station called Godhara station by muslims. Then railway minister Lalu prasad yadav instead of condemning it, he protected the culprits and his commission gave the report as the train was burned due to the gas leak while cooking. That anger against the culprits and government forced Hindus to take retaliation. Had Lalu could have arrested the culprits and brought them for justice post Godhara attacks might have not happened and probably Modi might not be able to be P.M. of India.

The poor always feel slighted. The hatred of the recent war in Bosnia and Kosovo go back to what happened to the Serbians at the end of World War II. "This was what they did to us".

The government told parliament that 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed, 223 more people reported missing and another 2,500 injured.
It was responding to a written question from an unnamed MP.
More People are murdered in Karachi in Six months and there is no compensation.

I am from a south asian country other than Pakistan and india hence giving my impartial views. Definitely the Gujrat riot was unfortunate but it was not unexpected in the backdrop of hostile invironment caused by babri-mosque demolition which was sparked by the arson of the Sabarmati express train at Godhra, Gujrat. That sad incident caused the death of 60 Hindu pilgrims inside the train by the fire. The problem started from that point. This case was highly politicised in India. Different investigation committees formed out of political necessaities gave different reports. However, more logical conclusion was that some local muslim extremist was involved in this criminal act out of vangeance. Nevertheless, the riots and killings of innocent muslims at the aftermath of that incident can not be justified. But it is also not true that only muslims were killed. Approximately 30% of those killed, mostly in police actions, were hindus. It also proves wrong that Gujrat government led by Mr. Modi did nothing to stop the violence. but may be inadequate. The root cause of the problem is the extremism and arrogance shown by the fundamentalists of all kinds. The same is true for the present day problems and violence in Pakistan too.

I see many muslim supporters here on this page blaming everyone else remember hindus also died i feel pity on you guys if judge people by seeing one side of the story .i dont want to remind you guys what happened or who started it, in the end it was only indians who suffered and they(both hindu and muslims) have learnt their lessons and living peacefully in gujrat now.they have shown India that they can coexist as brothers and work for developement (you can check any newspaper to validate my comment)

Agree with you Rajesh. The same thing often happened in America and still happens. Street riots are stopped quickly when the National Guard is immediately summoned by the governor of the state.
Too often the mayor of a big city does not want to turn over police powers to the state militia. There is political squabbling and riots go on for two or three days, when soldiers are not there to back up the police. This is very common. State governors usually don't take the bull by the horns.

This article shows some of facts. One is that Muslims were killed by post godhra rioters, and Hindus were killed by Police. This clearly means that state was not favoring rioters. Rioters were shoot and arrested by state police, Also in some cases people got Punishment too, and state police lodged FIR against them. I really want to thank Dawn that they called this riot as Post Godhra riot. Also for the fact that approx 1000 people were killed and that included Hindus too. In any case, how long will you play up things happened in India in 2002, whereas Godhra happens everyday in Pakistan. Some commenters here are saying that justice not served, They are seeing this case as whole and sole post godhra riots case. In fact this is only one case out of more others. In some cases post godhra rioters were punished too. That included big names like Dr Maya kodnani and Babu bajrangi with life sentences. So we can say that big names were punished, small names got freed. This news is about relatively small incidence in smaller town. I wish that every criminal should be punished, punishment should be according to their level of crime. Godhra train burners were the only reason for post godhra riots. After that political leaders who replied, and after that people who followed with with full of emotions.

@Mustafa There was no such report. Indian Government (and that too by Congress party which is inimical to BJP) always said about 850 people died and the breakdown was 600 Muslims and 250 Hindus. It is the Pakistani press which kept changing these numbers and increasing them. Also, the number of Hindus killed is never mentioned as if only #muslimlives matter! If only the Muslim mob did not burn down the compartment containing Hindu women and Children the whole thing would not have happened.

Took them 13 years to declare those 70 were not involved in the killing. Were they in the jail for 13 years? I doubt, they were on bail next day. What is 14 compared to 2000 massacre under the watch of Narendra Modi who was that time CM of Gujarat. Every one was innocent except 2014 who lost their lives. Shining example of world biggest democracy, Obama bought it, western countries bought it. Next in line, Christian churches, Sikhs already paid the price their Gurdwara was attacked in 1984. You forget to mention one important fact. Those in the train were not "pilgrims". They were Hindu karsevaks returning from Ayodhia mosque. Eye witnes statements from the train said these karsevaks were creating havoc on every train station. They tried to kidnap a young daughter of Muslim tea vendor at the station before the train got burnt. Who actually burnt the train is also disputed. Ask yourself this question. Why would Muslims burn a train of Hindu pilgrims for no reason and that too in India?

Religious riots and killing innocent citizens are evil and sad . Culprits escape usually because it is hard to isolate them and identify them among mobs . All religions should promote nonviolence, peace and harmony . I heard nice stories how some hindu families rescued their muslim neighbours from violent mobs in Punjab and some muslim familes rescued their hindu friends from mob violence in Pakistan during the birth of India and Pakistan . Such people are really angels . We are angels when we help fellow humans and devils when we hurt them. Don't we all have only one Creator ?

But, they won't escape Indian law. However, two wrongs don't make a right. If strong evidence has been made available then Mumbai planners can probably be persecuted quickly...

The fact IS post-Godhra, meaning riots that spread across Gujarat in the aftermath of Godhara. However, those killed were Indian citizens, both HINDU and following them, Muslims; both innocent and unrelated to the Godhara carnage. And we expect that judicious and decent PAKISTANI gentlemen should be evenhanded in their verdict on a neighbouring country's internal issue which of course was a serious lapse of governance...

To everyone who is losing their sleep over the Godhra riots, are forgetting that the riots were a direct results of the burning of a train carrying Hindu pilgrims. 59 hindus were killed by a mob of 1000 muslim arsons which led to the riots. Why does no one condemns that?

Shia killings media coverage doesn't even last for a day in Pakistan but Godhra riots has been getting coverage for last 13 years. That too projecting muslims as victims, forgetting that a train full of Hindu pilgrims were burnt by muslims before the riots started. Every news about Godhra must reiterate the burning of Hindus alive as well.
