QUETTA: Justice Mohammad Kamran Khan Mulakhail of Balochistan High Court (BHC) has directed the senior superintendent of police (traffic) in Quetta to initiate examination of buses plying in the city.

The judge issued the order on Saturday while hearing a petition filed by the local bus owners association in Sariab area against the secretary of Regional Transport Authority, Balochistan. He asked respondents in the petition to submit a comprehensive report on points raised in the petition.

The judge directed the officials concerned to submit working papers of traffic engineering bureau and ensure implementation of traffic laws.

The assistant advocate general of Balochistan informed the court that no traffic engineering bureau existed in Balochistan and that in the absence of engineering instructions the traffic police were unable to perform their duty effectively.

He said majority of buses plying in the city were about five decades old and called for a ban on them.

He suggested alternative routes for local buses to ensure better flow of traffic.

Shaukat Ali Rakshani, who represented the respondents, sought time to file counter affidavit. Faiz Ahmed appeared on behalf of the petitioner.

The hearing was adjourned to Feb 17.
