SHIKARPUR: At least 60 people were killed and 60 others injured in an explosion inside a central imambargah (mosque affiliated with Shia Muslims) in Sindh province's Shikarpur district on Friday.

Civil Hospital Shikarpur had issued a list of 49 victims out of whom 46 bodies had been identified whereas the identity of 3 others was yet to be confirmed.

The cause of the blast has not been ascertained, but suspicions are that it may have been the result of a suicide attack.

Reuters reported that Jundullah, a splinter group of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which last year pledged support for the Islamic State group based in Syria and Iraq, claimed responsibility.

“Our target was the Shia mosque ... They are our enemies,” said Jundullah spokesman Fahad Marwat.

The Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) announced to observe a 'peaceful strike' across Sindh in the wake of the terrorist attack.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have also given their support to the MWM's call for a day of mourning.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah also announced a day of mourning for the victims of the blast.

The imambargah is located in Shikarpur's Lakhi Dar area and the explosion occurred just after Friday prayers.

A number of victims were trapped under debris after the roof of the imambargah collapsed due to the intensity of the blast. Many of the casualties were shifted to hospitals in Sukkur and Larkana districts of Sindh.

MWM central leader Allama Mohammed Amin Shaheedi announced three days mourning, describing the incident a failure of the government.

He told Dawn that the party's further course of action would be announced in a press conference later in the evening.

The Jafria Disaster Cell (JDC) demanded that the critically wounded victims be immediately shifted to Karachi for treatment.

A huge contingent of police, rangers and ambulances arrived at the scene from the nearby towns in the aftermath of the explosion.

Local resident Mohammad Jehangir told AFP he had “felt the earth move beneath my feet” as he prayed at another mosque around 1.5 kilometres away.

An official with a national Shia organisation, Rahat Kazmi, told AFP that up to 400 people were worshiping in the mosque when the blast struck.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon told Dawn that an emergency had been imposed at all hospitals in Shikarpur and surrounding talukas and cities.

He added that provincial Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Sindh Health Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar have taken strong notice of the incident.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussain, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chairman Imran Khan and MQM chief Altaf Hussain issued condemnation messages against the incident.

Later Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah visited the site of the explosion and announced Rs2 million compensation for the families of those killed.

Shah also announced Rs200,000 for each person wounded in the attack. He said the Sindh government would bear all medical expenses for the treatment of the injured.

Meanwhile 14 severely injured were shifted to a private hospital in Karachi for medical treatment.

MWM also staged sit-ins at several spots, including MA Jinnah road, in Karachi to protest against the Shikarpur tragedy.

A large number of people, including children, women and senior citizens participated in the sit-ins at Five Star chawrangi, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Abbas Town, Star Gate Shahrah-e-Faisal and Malir 15.

Molana Hassan Zafar of MWM has announced that protests would continue till the deceased are buried after funeral prayers.

PTI, PPP, MQM and ANP have also endorsed the peaceful strike, called by the MWM.

Read: After Peshawar, Rawalpindi mourns

The incident comes as Pakistan is attempting to implement the National Action Plan to combat and root out terrorism from the country, an initiative that was set in motion after the Dec 16 attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School in December 2014.

Also read: Militants in Punjab

It was the second major attack on an imambargah in the country since the beginning of 2015; the first being an attack on Rawalpindi’s Imambargah Aun Mohammad Rizvi in the garrison city’s Chatian Hatian area.

At the same time, Pakistani security forces are engaged in the North Waziristan and Khyber tribal regions — with the operation in Waziristan starting soon after a terrorist attack on Karachi's Jinnah International Airport and the theater of war expanding into Khyber.

Pakistan is in a state of civil war. It is high time all civilian and military institutions wake up to this fact. I'm not advocating Martial Law but something close to it, in terms of efficacy, seriousness of dealing with terrorists, law enforcement, traffic enforcement needs to be in place. I welcome the Military courts but individuals found guilty need to be brought to justice immediately.

The legacy of Zia-Ul-Haque will continue to haunt Pakistanis till the presiding govts stop appeasing the Mullahs, the army goes back to the barracks where they belong, the middile class rises up with one voice, the socially privileged are willing to sacrifice and come out of the their coccons and make a meaningful contribution and lastly but most important the education system in Pakistan is completely overhauled and truly liberal and secular teaching is introduced. Nobody in Paksitan it seems is willing to take the plunge - fear of violence is everywhere. what a sad state of affairs.

The peoples party government is responsible for these many deaths in Shikarpur today due to two reasons. First they failed to take the threats of terrorism in interior sindh very seriously and could not take measures to apprehend the terrorists living or getting support in Shikarpur, secondly; the civil rescue and emergency medical treatment were comparable to any third class village level health facility. The response was delayed and inadequate. Patients were shifted in poor transport as there were not enough ambulances (only 4), there were not enough doctors, there was no prior adequate blood transfusion arrangement. All this tells the sorry state of governance in sindh.

Military rule may be the immediate but temporary need of the hour. Majority of population under 25 is unemployed. So terrorism isn't just misguided ideology, but is an alternate economy for the underbelly. What Pakistan needs is a transparent, well-intended democratic civilian government developing trade and commerce, modernizing education and infrastructure. Pakistan needs to step into the 21st century.

It seems, it's not going to be easy. The problem has developed over a long period of time, and nobody paid attention to the real causes. Even at this time, they don't seem to be working with sincerity and diligence. The people who are trying to solve the problem are the same who created the problem.

We are very happy that the Pakistan Government is now doing everything to confront to root out terrorists from their soil which would allow both Pakistan and India to live peacefully and resolve all their outstanding issues including Kashmir. Since neither India nor Pakistan will budge, I think both countries should agree to status quo, otherwise there is a great possibility of war and this will be a great human tragedy for both counties and the world. My grandparents were from Pakistan and they had nothing but full of praise of both communities until partition and that was a great tragedy for both countries. I pray for an end to all conflicts. May Allah grant peace to the families of. I am a Sunni Muslim (although I hate this concept of sects) and I feel for my Shia brothers who became a target of these brutal savages. During Holy Prophet's reign, religious minorities were allowed to live a peaceful life side by side with Muslims. I don't understand what kind of Islam these jandullah retards want to implement. No one gives you the right to take an innocent life specially not Islam that you so staunchly follow. You are just a bunch of cowards who deserve to die a very painful and miserable death.

I wish our leaders and ex leaders for eg NS and A Zardari(although they are an embarrassment to the nation) do more than just sit in their rooms and tell their secretaries to let the media know that they have condemned the attacks or if tHey cannnot do so, should resign from their posts. They are themselves eating up Pakistan from the inside.

I hope Gen Raheel Sharif considers these innocent lives as valuable as those of army children.

Lastly, I thank my Indian counterparts who share their condolences and thoughts with us. As for hate promoters on both sides, this is not a fight against sects. This is a fight for humanity against these worthless illiterates who pick up guns, bombs and. Go around killing innocents.

@GuestReader Very simple and practical. Parade them in the streets. Those who are prepared to die and those mastermind behind them. But then, there is a problem---some of the politicians, some of the judiciary and especially a big convoy of lawyers would be paraded !! Is it not a retired judge and convoy of lawyers who have hailed the killer of a provincial governor as their hero?

This is a sad moment for humanity, my condolences to all those affected. I hope at least NOW Pakistan must be realizing that terrorists can never be friends to anyone except themselves. What we are seeing now, is the poisonous fruit of the poisonous seed of terrorism sown by Pakistan in India years back just for territorial gains. You cannot win by fomenting terrorism in other countries, it is sort of a boomerang which can and will most certainly hit you back sooner than later. If the Paki Govt has come to it's senses after seeing the horrible results of their past actions, they should ask for and I am almost sure that they will get it, help from India to counter terrorism in their land,.......after all, India has been fighting terrorism coming from across the border and has overcome that demon with great success in the past. Another point, when will the Paki Government stop pretending that they have never harboured the terrorists and that their agencies have nothing to do with the terrorist organisations. It is a time to deal with the terrorists with a heavy hand. Unfortunately, those heavy hands themselves, are in a hand-shake with the terrorists.

ziavrep labqi
Jan 31, 2015 07:56am

@V K Das

The police would know about the terrorists if they care to know. It is having a nice time and is mostly busy in extortion of money from public or in running or patronizing illegal activities. If the police of the area is punished after any incident of terror happens in its jurisdiction, it would definitely become vigilant and focused and proactive.

It is really strange that every time a terror incident happens, the ministers unashamedly pronounce that it is impossible to stop such acts of terror. The police would never be pushed to do its duty in such an indifferent set up.

Cant imagine how many lives have been wasted, in order to prove their religions superiority. If u r really sensitive to ur religion then consider it like ur parents. No body says that my parents are better than urs and no body fights over it. and we respect each others parents. Because we know there is no comparison......why not in case of religions ?? if u r not doing it in this way than there is some thing wrong with u ... religion is not fault........thats why bieng secular is always better... though some times glitches in that too...but every one is considered equal before law and should be treated in the same manner...

Of course you cannot punish enough someone who is prepared to die anyway.....but then u can fulfill his wish (i.e. kill him) in such a manner that will terrify the would-be terrorists. That is to say, the only way to deal with terrorists is "terrorise the terrorists" becoz that is the only language they understand.

Dear Brothers The Cause of All Hostilities the world over is lack of spiritual insight; whether A Sunni Shia Hindu jew sikh christian we are under the same laws . birth death old age childhood pains & pleasures of a shia a sunni or hindu are same that proves we are under the laws of one God or Allah, And he is treated us equally by exercising these laws on all of us. Similarly The Air Fire Water & All the elements of nature treat us equally. So this hostilities are the outcome of denying the diversity among us. But Allah or God has made diversity in nature !! Just see Land is different from water; Fire different from wind different seasons; moon is different from sun, even in our body eye is different from ear, two children of same parents have diverse natures. So we must know that when any single person is killed it gives Pain to Loving Allah or god, how can they hate any one because everyone is their Creation, can a mother do bias between two children. So we must know our Anatomy or Hardware is same but the SOFTWARE or philosophy or thoughts are the cause of problems; So please give this bodily distinctions of cast creed religion and rise above to spiritual plane where we are same. Live n Let Live, Serve humanity & thus make God or Allah Happy.

Feb 01, 2015 05:29am

@Syeda Ali How can you deter suicide bombers with threat of public hanging? You need to, I think, start by feeling empathy with the other. Every leader wants the other dead , Musharaff against NS, IK against SC Judge, etc.. The religious come next. Getting rid off blasphemy laws and treating all beliefs equally under law (even aspirationally) is a good start. That start will happen when the educated, like the commentators on this blog really accept separation of state and faith. This may not happen before a civil war and loss of the state.
