Bride, five others die as wall collapses on Lahore wedding stage

LAHORE: As many as six people were killed when a wall collapsed on a stage during a wedding ceremony in Lahore, DawnNews reported late on Tuesday.

Two women and two children were also among the dead while 20 others were injured in the incident at the marriage hall in the provincial capital's Shadbagh area.

The newly-erected wall collapsed amidst rain in the area.

The wall collapsed on a large number of people present at and around the stage. Injured and bodies were rushed to Mayo and Kot Khawaja Saeed hospitals where doctors pronounced six people dead.

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif expressed profound grief over the incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter. He has also directed that all facilities be provided to the injured receiving treatment at hospitals.

In a statement, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain also expressed his grief for the heirs of those affected.

Meanwhile, the district administration has initiated a probe to determine if the wall collapsed due to usage of substandard material or for any other reason.

One doesn't need to be Einstein to figure this one out; Sub-standard of course but we have never seen anybody being taken to task, set an example for others, unfortunately investigators will have a field day, offering the accused to bribe them on his way out to freedom and repeat this else where.

Sad incident. I don't think safety standards are being followed during the constructions of buildings, which subsequently leads to such unwanted incidents.

It is sad that lives were lost during wedding celebration. My question: Is there any Punjab or Lahore building code for construction of facilities for use by the community/public? If you have building construction, the buildings are constructed to meet the standards specified in the codes, inspected and then if meets the code, occupancy permit is issued. It appears to me the building did not meet any construction standards and hence people using the building are killed. Can the officials looking after the buildings and inspections take responsibility of this killer accident?
