India wants to engage Pakistan in ‘low-intensity war’: Asif

ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif has said that India wants to engage Pakistan in a “low-intensity war”, expressing confidence that Pakistan is capable of replying to any aggression.

“It seems that India does not understand the language of love and peace,” the defence minister told reporters outside the Parliament House after conclusion of the National Assembly session on Saturday.

Mr Asif said the premier had expressed the desire for having peace with India and all other neighbouring countries with sincerity, but India had not reciprocated Islamabad’s goodwill gesture.

“India wants to keep us busy in a low-intensity war or low-intensity engagement on our eastern border. They are pursuing the same tactics of keeping our forces busy on all fronts and the anti-Pakistan mentality of the Indian leadership is now fully exposed,” he added.

Commenting on relentless shelling by India troops along the Working Boundary for the past few days, the defence minister said it seemed that India did not want to see Pakistan’s success in its fight against terrorism. In fact, he added, the Indian aggression at this time proved that it was supporting terrorists.

Mr Asif said India had started cross-border shelling to engage Pakistan’s armed forces on the eastern front at a time when it was busy in the fight against terrorists inside the country and on the western border. “It seems that India does not want to see a durable peace in Pakistan, Afghanistan and in the region,” he said.

The defence minister said Islamabad had raised the issue of the killing of two personnel of Chenab Rangers and civilians with India at all appropriate forums.

I am not a big fan of Kh. Asif but his comments are spot on here. The Indian government is being led by a PM who has played a big role in Gujrat riots were hundreds of innocent civilians were killed. This Indian government is in fact being run by the RSS and the like minded parties. Expecting anything positive from Modi will be a mistake.

All those guys who are blaming India for your internal troubles. Let me ask you a simple question, unlke Pakistan, India is a democracy where politicians face the wrath of people if they dont do anything for the good of the people. Why should they engage in this meaning less war that is not helping them in their next elections?? Even for a moment if you assume that it is to create a sense of nationalism, then why start it now when BJP has just come to power?? They can do it in their fourth year when elections are nearing. You might say that the India Army is doing this on its own. Assuming that is the case then why with Pakistan alone when we have 6 other countries that are sharing borders with us. You might say China has a border problem with India. but remember it is not a low intensity war but just a dispute under negotiations. There are hardly any shots fired at that side of the border. Probably you guys will try the line that China can walk over India, hence the good behavior from India. But think if going nuclear has scared India from attacking Pakistan, why should it be different for China when it has to confront India ?? It is easy to hide your heads like ostriches and hole this will pass away. But it is not going to . Pakistan's biggest problem is not outside its borders. To tell you the truth, Indians generally would not like to do anything with the current Pakistan, even a low intensity war. We look at the current Pakistan as a big infectious boil waiting to burst and spread its infection.

For the first time I agree with him. India has been trying to divert army's attention from operation against terrorists. + it all started getting intense since modi took over. India is helping the terrorists ---- no doubt ATLEAST in my mind. Modi will cause another war --- and India has to loose a lot more regardless of the outcome. Defensive / offensive strategy will ultimately lead to a full war.

Why is it that every time military in pakistan starts making the moves to take over governance, the borders become active and tense? Why is it totally quiet and peaceful when a full majority and democratically elect government takes reigns of pakistan? (At least for a year or two anyway, until something else goes wrong and people start feeling the buyer's remorse). It almost seems like 'India as an existential threat to Pakistan' is unspoken technique used to mix up different colors to hide the dark spots that surface from time to time. Speaking of which, India is not much different. Vajpayee's term was a direct outcome of indulgence in Kargil.

I sincerely convey my gratitude to the editorial team of The Dawn for not taking the truth completely under siege as Pakistani government would have wanted you to do. Your reports on this issue have been quite close to be called unbiased, with a slight and obvious tilt towards your own country. As an Indian national and sufferer of cross-border terrorism I can only say that last month when Peshawar was bleeding from one of the deadliest acts of terrorism on the Pakistani soil, Indians bled as well. Our newspapers carried pictures of young schoolchildren mourning for their Pakistani counterparts, with tears rolling down on their cheeks. In Kolkata, the city where I reside, people marched on the roads to condemn the henious attack. Pakistan will perhaps never understand that if you keep the snakes in your own backyard it will not bite your neighbour only. Someday they will bite you as well. And then when you'll cry for help it's your neighbour who will rush to be your saviour. The unprovoked firing from Pakistani army is killing women and children of Kashmir. Why can't people of Pakistan say for once that enough is enough. We have had enough of bloodshed and killing of innocent people. Now stop all this. We just want peace.

Unlike the predecessor, the new Indian government wants to engage the Pak army actively and respond in kind. The Pak security establishment is actually exploiting this new mode of engagement before the US President Obama's visit to India. Pres. Obama is scheduled to attend India's Republic Day celebrations on Jan 26, 2015. India would have liked to showcase the recently concluded elections in J&K, and thus push the J&K matter down the list of items on the agenda. On the other hand, the escalated border tension just a few days before the visit would hopefully force the US hand and pull the issue back to the top of the list--this should be Pak's strategy. Unfortunately, civilians on both the sides suffer. On a longer term, India is aspiring to be a global contender, but with these low to medium intensity border conflicts, Pak hopes to keep it on par with itself --in the league of the "could have been" nations that are busy constantly negotiating and renegotiating loans from international donors, lurching from one crisis to the next.

Mr Defence minister, can you provide ONE example when Pakistan have taken moral responsibility for the terrorist attack in India, Afghanistan or any other part of the world? Americans traced Osama in Pakistan, Drones are used everyday to kill terrorists & Pakistan uses air-force to kill he terrorists. But, when India & Afghanistan give you evidence against terrorists and you are requested to act, you people simply turn blind and instead send so called good terrorists to India. Frankly speaking, there is NO TRUST for Pakistani establishment. Pakistani people in general are not bad,but, establishment there is playing the dirty game all he time.

India's foreign policy is defensive and not to attack first, they will not start a war and will not cross the border, that is the official policy. But Modi as an aggressive individual does want a war, so he is provoking pakistan to take the first punch and pakistan is repeatedly falling for it. If the war starts now, Modi will have an excuse to escalate and will only claim that he responded to Pakistan's aggression and more folks around the world are likely to take India's word than Pakistan. I think for once pakistan army/leadership should do what NYC cops did to mayor Bill de Blasio, just turn your back and let Indians scream and yell but get *no* response out of you, eventually they will get tired and step down.

Being a 41 year old educated Indian, I do not believe that India is entirely innocent. On the other hand, Pak army generals have a more convincing motive to engage india thru shelling so as to keep American aid. In all fairness both sides are equally ruthless but the difference is that Pak is doing it at the behest of China to contain india, while india is doing it at its own behest.

India is much focused on relationship with China. Secondly, whenever someone questions Pakistan's intentions on terrorism, there is an automatic escalation on the loc accompanied by publicity stunts by the politicians. It does not take rocket science to understand Pakistan's double speak.

Guys, india plans in next few years. 1) Smart cities. 2) Bullet trains. 3) 24 hr power for few villages which still dont have. 4) Space programs. 5) Online governance. 6) Clean India with clean rivers etc. Many more to come. Gov has aready initiated actions we will achive in next few years, sorry dont hav time for war.

we have not yet learned any lesson from our past ,it was india who broke us into two parts and still continue its belligerent policy against Pakistan , why we lament everywhere take serious steps to pay them back ,

Pakistan has all the time in the world to keep creating lies even if everyone knows what it is doing. Eventually, someday, all Pakistanis will understand the ideas and the lies that Pakistan is fighting for. But they will never be able to understand why?

@ghanshyam : For God's sake please understand that an Independent and Stable Pakistan is in India's Interest. Meantime please do some research on the Total Trade and its Destinations in respect of the Central Asian Republics. Possibly over Eighty per Cent of their Trade is with China, Russia and Europe which is carried by Rail and Pipe Lines in respect of Oil and Natural Gas. Pakistan should solve its own problems in its own way. Please don't lumber India with Pakistan's Problems. India has enough problems of its own.
