QUETTA: Two policemen, including District Police Officer (DPO) Kharan, were seriously injured in Quetta when militants ambushed their vehicle on Monday.

Levies sources told Dawn via telephone that DPO Kharan Muhammad Anwar Badini was patrolling the city when assailants attacked him.

"Assailants sprayed bullets at his vehicle," Levies sources said.

The DPO sustained bullet wounds and was shifted to a hospital in critical condition along with the other policeman who was injured in the attack.

Levies sources added that assailants managed to escape unhurt from the spot after launching the attack.

Police and Frontier Corps personnel arrived promptly at the scene.

Shopkeepers pulled down their shutters in the aftermath of the firing incident as panic prevailed in the city.

Chief Minister Balochistan Dr Abdul Malik Baloch strongly condemned the incident and ordered the police to conduct a probe and submit a report in this regard.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. However, Levies sources suspect Baloch separatists to be behind the attack.
