BAHAWALPUR: The Baghdadul Jadid police registered a case on Thursday under terror and Pakistan Penal Code sections against 36 students of the Islamia University, Bahawalapur (IUB), for allegedly beating a lecturer and resorting to firing on Baghdadul Jadid campus on Wednesday.

The first information report was registered on the complaint of injured Muhammad Ali Naeem, department of fine arts and design lecturer, forwarded to the police station by the IUB registrar.

Mr Naeem nominated Jawad Nazir, Malik Arsalan, Ali Asghar, Muhammad Usman, Arsalan, Salman, Usman, Kamran, Mahar Shehzad Ahmed, Chaudhry Ahsan and Salman.

He said they were armed and accompanied by 26 other unidentified boys, who blocked the path in front of his room and started teasing girls. When the complainant stopped them from doing so, the suspects tortured him with pistol butt and also opened firing.

Earlier, principal security officer Tareef Ali Khan in a report to acting vice-chancellor said Naeem was attacked by nine students. The police circle did not confirm any arrest, saying the investigation was in progress.

In a related development, evening class students of the computer science department told a press conference two university professors allegedly teased the girls.

When the students protested, the university teachers with outsiders resorted to firing. They said they held a protest demonstration at the old campus chowk and protested against the incident.

DEMO: Several visually-impaired and disabled children, led by JI MPA Dr Waseem Akhtar, protested against police torture on their fellows in Lahore on Wednesday.

The protesters blocked road at DCO Chowk, where they staged a rally and raised slogans against Lahore police. They also demanded implementation of the reserved quota of the disabled in the government jobs and services. Due to blockade of the chowk, the vehicular traffic was diverted to other roads.

SCHOOL: Corps Commander of Bahawalpur Lt Gen Javed Iqbal presided over a function at Armed Forces’ Cholistan Special Education School on Wednesday.

Lt-Gen Iqbal gave away prizes to children. The special school was established by army here in 1997 where 147students are enrolled.
