HYDERABAD: Activists of the Shehri Action Committee along with members of civil society held a demonstration outside the local press club on Thursday against senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader and former education minister Pir Mazharul Haq for opposing the establishment of a university in Hyderabad.

Carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the PPP leader, they raised slogans in favour of the demand.

Speaking to the protesters, Professor Asif Zahoori alleged that the former minister opposed the idea because a university in Hyderabad would only benefit supporters of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He said Pir Mazhar’s thinking showed that he wanted to divide Sindh.

Anwar Kundan, Maulana Hassan Raza, Sakina Solangi, Abdul Hameed also spoke and accused Pir Mazhar of having an anti-Mohajir and Hyderabad-hostile mindset.

Muggers kill man

A man was gunned down, apparently by muggers, outside his house in Indus Colony, Qasimabad, late on Wednesday evening.

Two armed men intercepted Faizan Rind, said to be a cousin of an inspector in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Zulfikar Rind, and one of them aimed his pistol at his father accompanying him. Their act infuriated Faizan Rind, who slapped the armed man. A fight ensued and armed man opened fire. Faizan Rind, who had just arrived home from Karachi was parking his car near his, sustained bullet wounds.

He was taken to the Combined Military Hospital where he died during treatment. The armed men fled leaving their motorcycle and the weapon behind.

The victim was a student of the Karachi University and originally hailed from Nawabshah.
