LAHORE: State Minister for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali suspended on Tuesday three sub-division officers (SDOs) and two executive engineers (Exens) for over-billing and failing to redress public complaints.

At an open court held at Lahore Electric Supply Company office, the minister instructed officers, including the chief executive, to remain present in their offices from 9am to 11 daily to listen to public complaints.

He also asked the parliamentarians to inspect offices during these hours to ensure presence of all officers. His maiden court, however, witnessed hooliganism as both major unions – Piyam and Hydro Electric – wrestled for space on the stage. It was only after substantial disturbances that the minister was able to settle down and started listening to the people’s complaints, who had gathered in a massive number. A majority of complaints were regarding overbilling and the failure of the officials to even listen to them, leave alone addressing them. He issued on the spot orders, which included suspensions as well.

Later, he told reporters he would be holding such kutcheries allover the country, as directed by the prime minister. All officers would be made to sit in their offices, listen to complaints and address them on the spot or the ministry would take action against them.

The minister claimed that 4,000 megawatts would be added to the system before the summer next year, which should go a long way in easing life of people. Regarding reported fast meters, he said that audit was being conducted and anyone, including any company, would be taken to task if found guilty.
