Shahbaz announces Rs5m for family of lynched Christian couple

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday visited the family of a Christian couple burnt alive by a mob in Kot Radha Kishan near Lahore for allegedly desecrating pages of the Holy Quran.

The chief minister announced Rs5 million from the provincial government as compensation for the family of the deceased as well as 10 acres of land.

Condoling with the family for their loss, Shahbaz also announced that the Punjab government will take care of the couple’s three children and provide for their education and well-being.

“There is no limit to which this dreadful act can be condemned. The perpetrators will be tried under anti-terrorism and will be given harsh punishment,” he said.

On Wednesday, police arrested 50 villagers who were believed to be part of the mob that beat the couple to death.

The arrests included the owner of the brick kiln where 25-year-old Shama, who was pregnant at the time of the incident, and her husband Shahzad Masih worked as bonded labourers.

According to reports, more than a thousand charged people from three nearby villages tortured the couple before putting them into the kiln’s furnace on Tuesday. Police said a local religious leader had fanned the issue.

Kasur District Police has registered a case against 660 villagers, including 60 who have been nominated in the FIR, under sections 302, 436, 201, 148, 149, 353 and 186 of the PPC and 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and CM Shahbaz have already constituted a three-member committee comprising the secretary of minority affairs, chairman of CM’s inspection team and additional IG to investigate the matter.

Kasur police have also enhanced security of the Christian community in the village and in Klarkabad, mostly inhabited by Christians about 3km from Chak 59, the place of the incident.

One must ask, where was this security before the incident. Why the govt. always react after the fact. Wasn't Joseph Town incident enough evidence that security was needed? What is the point now. These things will never stop until the killers including the facilitators are brought to justice. Enough is enough. No need to make commission.If these Mullahs are not dealt with, these things will keep on happening. Make an example out of him. Why do we complain the taliban, TTP and other terrorist organizations that kill innocents in the name of the religion, when these Mullahs are doing the same thing.

The CM should be asked where were you when the couple was burning live, first he did not provided security to couple now how much money can get the three orphans the parents of their own. They went their to just save their skin and to announce the rewards from public money to silence the community. If he is so serious and sincere the FIR should not be so weak, nominating 400 unknown persons, this means they are not serious in nabbing any one.

I personally hate this custom of ours to give money to victim which seems to compensate for the crime. It is rather admission of failure. Why don't the government give them justice for a change? If they do they, that will make other people stop committing such crimes. That said I am all for the financial help of the victims but they shouldn't forget pursuit of real justice which sadly in often case is forgotten.

This couple was young and had a whole life ahead of them. Compensation is good but ensuring punishment is handed over and enforced is even more important. The punishment should be harsh enough to keep others from taking law into their own hands and refrain them from taking such action in future.

To CM of Punjab, No amount of money can bring back the couple thrown into the kiln and I am not sure if this couple had any dependants left behind who may be able to use this sum. The best that you should do is ensure "blood for blood" punishment handed to the culprits so that similar crime perpetrators would think twice before accusing anyone for blasphemy. To start with you should ensure that Quadri ( murdrer of Gov Taseer) is punished for his crimes instead of inciting others to commit similar acts.

It is a good step though but all perpetrators of this heinous crime should be punished to the fullest extent so that such cases do not happen in future. No one should be allowed to prosecute anyone based on religion, sect or race. State has to condemn such acts and minorities should be given all kind of protection. Also, would it be given to them by opening an account in the joint name/s of Government/ kids' name until they reach adulthood - 18 years? Also, would the 10 acres given to them be protected from surrounding community members who are in majority? What about rendering prompt justice to the perpetrators by a quick justice committee and letting the world that these met their harshest punishment? when would the justice be served? The money will not bring this couple back however, the money will help the family. If the Govt. of Punjab is serious and wants to protect its minorities than, proactively, the Govt. must release Asia Bibi from jail and take her into protective custody before any harm is done to her. As we know now there have been acts of violence committed against the accused of Blasphemy by security personnel and no doubt her life is also at risk.

While the act of killing someone is abhorent and wrong, what about the allegation itself? Why is noone talking about what the couple allegedly did? Desecration of Quran is also not acceptable!!! Why did they engage in such an act? Surely where there is smoke there is fire

Who defines this desecration and what is this blasphemy ? Our fanatic and illiterate Mullahs have hijacked our society driving more into a polarized field. Whenever such thing happen, I just imagine what would have been Our benevolent and beloved prophet's (P.B.U.H) reaction? He was the most tolerant man in the world to be seen.Today's people or mob who burnt this couple are no different then Quraish some 1500 years ago who used to beat their slaves to death for small violations. Are we increasing love for Islam or telling the World " HEY LOOK WE ARE MUSLIMS AND WE HATE NON MUSLIMS BECAUSE WE ARE SICK OF OURSELVES. There are questions about efficiency of Police, Where were the savior of people when so called True muslim tortured the couple and then put them into kiln.And its really condemnable act , even more worse . I hope that cheque is not just to dismental that act but the help of poor family. it is becoming Govt. attitude to distribute money to victims but justice.
