PESHAWAR: Customs officials seized a consignment of narcotics, weighing 100 kilogrammes, and arrested one alleged drug smuggler on Jamrud Road here on Thursday.

A raiding party led by assistant collector Asfandyar Khan stopped a car (CS496-Islamabad) on Jamrud Road and recovered 60kg of opium and 40kg of hashish from it. The car was coming from Khyber Agency to Peshawar.

An official Arbab Siddique said that the alleged smuggler, Fazal Muqeem, was arrested who revealed that the consignment was meant for export. He said that the car was non-custom paid and carrying fake number plate.

Quoting the driver, he said that he was not owner of the consignment, but had got Rs5,000 for carrying it to Chamkani area of Peshawar. A case has been registered against the driver.

Meanwhile, police claimed to have arrested suspected persons, including three proclaimed offenders, during a search operation in parts of Peshawar. A police spokesman said that the search operation had been conducted in connection with the security plan for Muharram. He said that details about the arrested persons could not be given because they were under interrogation.
