Taliban assail Nobel decision

PESHAWAR: Members of the media division of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan’s offshoot Jamat-ul-Ahrar criticised the awarding of Nobel Peace Prize to Malala Yousufzai, calling her an “agent of kuffar (disbelievers)”.

In English messages posted on Friday on the Twitter accounts of Jamat-ul-Ahrar spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan and the chief of its Ihya-e-Khilafat media division, Saleh Qassam, and media member Ibrahim Khorasani, commented on Malala and the award, together stating that she did not represent Islam.

Ehsanullah threatened that fighters would continue to strike people who took what to them was anti-Islamic positions.

Did the Taliban take up the responsibility to decide who represents Islam? By whose authority I might ask? Let us ask the Taliban this: What is your contribution to the welfare and progress of mankind? Are you setting up hospitals or centres of research or learning? Has anyone amongst you written or published a book or even an article setting out an original idea, a vision or a solution to the problems that face the world? A theological misunderstanding is one of the core problems. These guys assume that they have responsibility to save our future thereafter. They just want to ensure that we eventually go to heaven. Just that they are sending many of us too quickly! I feel Muslim scholars should address this issue in an international well publicized debate.
