KARACHI: Arjumand Azhar Hussain — the man who reportedly filmed the video of politicians allegedly responsible for the delay of a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight on September 16 — was fired from his job at Gerry's Group.
Speculation was rife on Tuesday that Hussain’s sacking was linked to the video clip he filmed that showed irate airline passengers barring Senator Rehman Malik and Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) Member of National Assembly Dr Ramesh Kumar Wakwani from boarding the PIA aircraft after facing what they said was a delay of two and a half hours.

Gerry's Group, which was Hussain's former employer took to their Facebook page to respond to rumours that the sacking was due to political influence, saying their decision was “purely based on merit”.

Rehman Malik and Ramesh Kumar Wakwani were accused of holding the plane back while other passengers waited for hours.
Malik denied that the delay had to do with him, and said that take-off was delayed due to a technical fault. PIA confirmed that the delay was due to a technical fault, but later said that there was a "further unnecessary delay" that resulted in action against PIA staff. Two employees of PIA were subsequently suspended.

If he is really sacked for this reason, which is very possible in a society like ours, its a shame. All of must stand against VIP culture, be it for civilians or military. Something i find ironic is regarding the people from military background rejoicing the incident but its the same people who get royal treatment where they go in C130s and royal suites that are only for the families of the military elite. If we are standing up against this culture, there shouldn't be any discrimination b/w civilian and military elite.

The honourable Senator and MNA were late by hours. But for the protests by non-VIP passengers the delayed flight would have taken off several hours late as is the norm under PPP and PML (N) governments.
Most Pakistanis have been victim of these type of episodes. Many have died in ambulances before reaching the hospital because of VIP blockage of streets. Instead of investing in GESTAPO type intelligence services the rulers and the rulers-in-waiting should invest in common sense and decency.
The clarifications from RM does not appeal to a common man's intelligence.

I will never us Gerry service again and I am ashamed to see that an organization which has been blessed with wealth, towering social status , can stoop so low, that just to please these corrupt politicians they have fired a person for getting the video on web . I don,t think Rehman Malik, and other gentleman are important enough to delay a plane.As to how they were allowed to board late, once in Pune due to an accident of my autorickshaw, I arrived one hour late at air port.For some reason plane had not taken off and I could board.I feel airline has passed its failure on Rehman Malik

When people try to take law in their own hands, they should not be encouraged but should be reprimanded. Fix the system, do not take it in your hands like how pti government has done it in kp. They claim to fix the police system they did not encourage people to break the law. Gerry's contractual income depends a lot on its relationship with the sitting government in Pakistan. It has been successful in acquiring permission with various embassies within Pakistan for aiding visa application process and charge a fee on each application made. This is very easy money for the company. Gerry's has now a monopoly in this domain within Pakistan and its not possible to avoid using Gerry's if you need any such services.
In addition to offering services with Pakistan, they have now contracted Pakistan embassy to provide visa services for Pakistan within UK. This is even more lucrative as for each visa application they charge a fee of £36, which comes out to be which in one instance gives them a margin of 45%.
Now how Gerry's is able to acquire all these contracts and monopolise this area is beyond my understanding. Isn't there any other single group or organisation in Pakistan capable of such services?

Owner of Gerry's is known among political circles to have bought his seat as a Balochistan senator a few years back. This organization is knee deep in Pakistani politics of status co and for people who are aware of the political workings of our nation have no two opinions about why this Gentleman was relieved of his duties.

This is a very sad situation. When someone does the right thing he gets punished. That is why lot of people do not have the courage to step forward to do the right thing because they are afraid of adverse consequences.
Pakistani nation has to stand up with this gentleman & support him for doing the right thing. The nation should boycott Gerrys so it hurts the company financially & then they will realize that they cannot pull wool over the eyes on the nation.
Mr Arjumand Azhar Hussain has a very strong case, he should sue Gerrys for wrongful dismissal, tarnishing his reputation, pain & suffering.
Some law firm should take up this case without cost ( pro bono). The positive publicity for the law firm from this case would be worth lot more than the money they would have earned from this case.
Mr Hussain you did the right thing & you should be proud of it. I commend you for your action. Well done Sir.

Gerry's Group has made a grave mistake to fire Mr. Hussain. There can now be similar reaction of people to Gerry as to VIP culture. It is a Korean company. It can be easily pushed out of Pakistan by the people of Pakistan. I see no reason, why the protesters should not do that. Try it and then see who comes to Gerry's help.
Gerry did a foolish thing. Even if they were going to fire Mr. Hussain on merit, it would be wise not to do it at this critical time. Also, Mr. Hussain already made the video, and is broadcast. By firing Mr. Hussain, damage can't be undone.

Those flights are delayed for genuine reasons, not for the so called VIPs. Then airlines compensate for those and do not make people sit in plan waiting for hours.
The other thing is in the USA anybody can record in public space and post it, as per court decisions, not even privacy applies there. Arjumand did not break any law.
Fixing systems compared to reacting, very right. But things has gone so bad that it need to start from somewhere. And anywhere is welcome towards correction.

It is not a right of an ordinary citizen to take law in his hand. The actions of Mr. Arjumand tantamount cannot be condoned or overlooked by anyone, and if he or other passengers had any objection, they must have registered their protest with the PIA and/or concerned agency. However, it is not the right of passengers to create panic and lawlessness on whatever grounds, and those, who forced the two passengers to leave the plane, must be booked and charged for breaking the law. If the concerned courier agency has taken action against Mr. Arjumand, it must not be considered as a political victimization.

Arjumand Saheb acted in his personal capacity as a Pakistani and not as a Gerry's emplyee. He had every right to do so as any other Pakistani.
If Gerry's has sacked him on this account then he and the people of Pakistan have a right to ask for investigation and file a suit for the revocation of its trading licence. The company is not a law enforcement agency.
If the passengers had indeed acted unlawfully then PIA officials should have stopped the flight and called the police. They did not. Besides MNA Ramesh has admitted that Rehman Malik was the cause of the delayed flight.

So many people are saying here that they will boycott Gerrys Group and not do business with them henceforth.
Request Dawn to publish the Sales Figures of Gerrys Group over next few months, as emphatically as they have published this article.
Lets see if people actually are awakening? or is it just a momentary euphoria?

@Kaleem Ullah You are absolutly right, we dont know what was going on b/w them. But from Gerrys management point of view they lost a big PR opportunity. Organizations seek popular people (public figures) to be the part of their team and when an employee's popularity is based on his public image of being a righteous person (with non-political association)..... ohh man it is crown jewel, from business point of view. I would love to employe this man in my company even if he knows or do nothing, his face is enough to hugely boost my PR.

Not surprised at all. Rehman Malik was Interior Minister in PPP 5 year government but could not control crimes in the country. There was something about him being a British citizen at the time, Is it true? Is he british citizen or not, we do not know for sure? Now some where he is said to be a Senator? Sanator for what? If he is Senator, than he must be getting big salary and perks all paid for by poor tax payers of Pakistan. What he has done for the nation? Why he is running back & forth to London all the time? Are these official or personal trips? Who is paying for his air tickets? One wonders why Pakistanis hate their politicians?

@Hafeez ur Rehman THERE IS A NETWORK OF THESE VIP's. They all look after each other & support each other. Like alternating Monarch, with siblings, Prince, and benefitting friends and of course 'Chamcas'. That is political scence in place. Poor tax payers just keeping taxes to support corrupt politicians in place. A vicious cycle.

If Pakistanis do not step in and help compensate this man's loss, his sacrifice will be in vain and the VIP culture will continue. The alternative outcome could be an even stronger defeat of the VIP culture, as it was clear from the video that when the public steps up for their rights, politicians are weak and melt away. I would propose an online petition to make him one of the faces of PTI and the change that needs to happen, financial compensation in the form of funds collected or a comparable offer of employment and a petition to boycott Gerry's Group.

Someone in PIA who had access to passenger manifest ratted out the name to the VIP Mafia. From the name, and probably the CNIC number, they were able to find Mr. Arjumand Hussain, and then his employer.
I think the boycott campagin should be addressed towards PIA, FedEx, UK High Commission, Other Embassies. A small dharna at the UK consulation Karachi, Lahore etc., another Dharna at few FedEx locations will send the needed message.
Jerry ditched its employees at the Karachi Airport attack and basically just abandoned them. Now again Jerry's ditched their employee Mr. Hussain, to the VIP wolves.

The Chairman Senate must be made to open an enquiry against Rehman Malik and other delinquent Senators who misuse authority and then clearly lie to the public on national TV
