RAHIM YAR KHAN: A big torrent of flood would pass through the Indus on Sunday night while entering the area of Rahim Yar Khan, said Liaquatpur Assistant Commissioner Zahoor Husain Bhutta.

He said: “The torrent is heading towards the area of Liaquatpur tehsil which converges with Muzaffargarh district near Head Punjnad.”

He said the floodwater entered kacha area of the Liaquatpur tehsil and damaged mud houses and crops in the river bed area of Chohanwala whereas the administration was evacuating the people and shifting them to higher grounds.

Bhutta said: “There is no danger as the administration and irrigation authorities are monitoring the situation.”

He said timely announcements had resulted in maximum evacuation of people living in the river bed along with their cattle and belongings.

Irrigation Superintendent Engineer Saeedul Hassan Hashmi told Dawn that the speed of flood torrent was gradually reducing and “I am expecting 500,000 cusecs will pass from Chachran Sharif tonight.”

He said 50,000 cusec water would flow into this torrent from Taunsa; “however Rahim Yar Khan is safe from flooding.”

Meanwhile, the chief minister’s visit to the area was cancelled at the eleventh hour as a result the affected people brought for financial assistance at Chachran Sharif returned disappointed.

MANHOLE DEATH: A child died after falling into an open manhole of a sewer line here on Sunday.

According to Rescue 1122, 10-year-old Nisar Ahmed, son of Rangers Constable Zawar Husain, fell into the manhole near Chak 11. His body was retrieved after some time.
