UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations Security Council has deplored the resumption of fighting in the Gaza Strip, and urged both sides to resume talks.

In a statement that was adopted unanimously, the 15-member council “called upon the parties to resume negotiations to urgently reach a sustainable and lasting ceasefire”.

The statement, drafted by France, falls short of a full resolution. Diplomats here are aware any resolution on Israeli actions in Gaza will be vetoed by Washington. However, diplomats have said that stronger measures might be considered if there is no return to the Egyptian-mediated talks.

The president of the council, British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, said Security Council members were discussing a possible resolution that would call for a lasting ceasefire.
