Pakistan bags first medal at Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW: Pakistan won its first medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when Shah Hussain Shah bagged a silver medal in the 100-kg Judo event, DawnNews reported.

Shah lost to Scotland’s Euan Burton in the final session of men's judo event, coming second.

Shah had reached the final after defeating New Zealand’s Tim Slyfield in the semifinal.

Previously, he also won a bronze medal in the Asian Judo Championship and a bronze again at the Under-20 JIKJI Cup International Judo Championship held in South Korea.

He is the son of former Pakistani boxer Hussain Shah, who had also received a bronze medal in the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics in the middle weight category, and was the first Pakistani to win an Olympic boxing medal.

He has also represented Pakistan at the SAF Games in the past.

Congratulations man - well done - its quite an achievement to beat athletes from highly trained countries like NZ / England. Hope it inspires other young country men to prove themselves on global scale and also draws govt support to provide better facilities.

Congratulations to Shah for flying Pakistani Flag! Pakistan is enriched with a lot of talent like Shah Hussain Shah. But the sports department here is engulfed with non-sports administration. Politics are here there and everywhere in our country which prevent right players to show their talents. Take the example of Kamran Akmal Brothers in Pakistani cricket. In one of the past International Event I saw a Pakistani yacht participant who instead of struggling for a medal started looking behind himself and lost his concentration. Perhaps he was expecting early return to his Hotel for a rest.

@Far sight try and get off your backside and do something than to belittle any achievement. You forget India hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games and had set a precedence on winning medals and a target to further progress. In Pakistan, the government, sporting bodies and private sector are only interested in handful of sports such as cricket and hockey. Therefore until adequate resources and participation in international competition becomes a norm we will continue to collect medals solely on individual effort. Therefore it is a tremendous achievement by shah Hussain.

Shah born in London, GB is another Pakistani in the squad who is being outsourced to bring laurels for the country. This is what happens when the country forces itself to fight terror for others and ensures with time that it becomes our war. With such an environment Pakistan cannot produce own heroes and will rely on expats.

Well done my brothers! see in both countries, there are fanatics, but they are only on the fringe,though loud-mouthed! India was in similar situation may be a decade earlier; now with people actively pushing govts, things are changing, slowly. As u can see, compared to our population, we are still lagging others; so it is only small cheer for India also. I do trust, Pakistan has a lot of talent especially in sports where India is scoring- weight lifting, wrestling. Young population of Pakistan can do make changes in society and among others can bring changes ! So let us congratulate the man who brought smile on 18 crore Pakistanis at least for a day !

@Abdul Yes! We are doing far better, at least at commonwealth level. Check the results of last CWG2010 in New Delhi. India won 101 medals in comparison to Pakistan's 5 and stood at 2nd in medal tally. Looking forward to see more medals this time around. Wait and Watch.

Congratz to Shah and all the 26 Indian medalists so far. However contrary to the comments here, I see no reason for Indians to boast too much or Pakistanis to feel inferior about. Even a decade back, India was at the same level as Pakistan in sports. But with more and more injection of private funds, more innovative and viewer-friendly ventures (Indian Super League, Indian Badminton League, Pro Kabbadi League, Chennai Open, IPL etc) coming into fore and involvement of former local and International sportsmen helping out, India is fast surging ahead with increasing number of medals every event. Pakistan can emulate them. There is nothing wrong in learning what's good about your enemies.
