Six cities to have coal power plants

LAHORE: Punjab has planned to set up small coal-based energy projects in six towns.

Each of the six cities, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan and Sheikhupura, would have two power plants of 55MW each to meet energy requirements of industries.

This was disclosed in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Friday.

He said the plants would facilitate Sundar Industrial Estate, Lahore; M-III Industrial Estate, Faisalabad; Kot Lakhpat and Batapur in Lahore; Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan and Sheikhupura.

He formed a committee headed by the chief secretary to identify sites for the plants within three days where railway line, water supply, power transmission line and other basic facilities were already available.

Such a small scale coal power plants what a stupidity as the area refered also contain sugar industry why not baggase power plant. and what a fast decision for location. Setting up power plant is not joke and such a hefty decision may encourage only corruption. But who cares after all it is Mian Shahbaz Shareef brother of PM

I think the problem is not only energy shortfall but bigger problem is corruption .electronic prepaid meters should be introduced with real time GSM reading for industries.In a country where president Musharraf himself had been accused of power theft of electricity also,who will mend the situation .

@Altaf Ahmed Nizamani Selection of possible sites will not encourage corruption .Real corruption starts when one of the sites will be selected and land bought and it will take years.

Instead of coal why don't we invest more in solar? There is so much potential for that. And coal will keep getting more expensive, while solar keeps getting cheaper.

Six polluted cities ! Is there no way to build massive solar power plant/wind power plants ? Solar power plants can be built fast and at much lower cost. Each factory can have its own solar power unit !
