ISLAMABAD: Justice Nasirul Mulk was approved on Tuesday as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), DawnNews reported.

The appointment of Justice Mulk was approved by President Mamnoon Hussain. An official notification is still pending in this regard and is expected to be issued in a few days.

Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani will retire on July 5 whereas Justice Mulk will take oath as the country's top judge on July 6 and will serve for 13 months.

Mulk, a senior judge of the Peshawar High Court, belongs to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. He was born on August 17, 1950 in Swat, Pakistan and completed his degree of Bar-at-Law from Inner Temple London and was called to the Bar in 1977.

He currently serves as a Justice in the Supreme Court of Pakistan and was a part of the judges’ panel which conducted the proceedings of the contempt of court charges against former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Justice Mulk was sworn in as the new acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Pakistan last year in November, when outgoing CJP Jillani took oath as the country's top judge.

Before Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani several prominent Chief Justices have been appointed in Pakistan namely, Irshad Hasan Khan, Bashir Jehangir, Sheikh Riaz Ahmad, Nazim Hussain Siddiqui, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
