PESHAWAR/ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan army for the first time announced that the Haqqani network in North Waziristan is also a target of the current military operation.

"For the military, there will be no discrimination among Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) groups or Haqqani network, all terror groups are going to be eliminated," DG ISPR Major General Asim Bajwa told a briefing at GHQ.

He said so far 327 terrorists and 10 security personnel have been killed.

The DG ISPR confirmed the presence of a large number of Uzbeks and other foreign militants in North Waziristan, saying that they will all be wiped out.

"The Pakistan Army has requested the Afghan military to take action against terrorist hideouts in Kunar and Nooristan, but so far there has been no action taken," General Bajwa said.

The chief military spokesman said it is solely a Pakistan Army operation and not a joint Pak-US military offensive, adding that Pakistani security forces are capable of doing such an operation.

"North Waziristan has become a hub of terror and suicide attacks in the country because planning of such attacks was taking place here," Bajwa remarked.

He dispelled the impression that the operation was launched without political approval and said, "The operation was launched after a decision was made at the political level."

On Wednesday Prime Minister’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz said security forces were conducting the operation against militants without discrimination.

North Waziristan ground operation kicks off

Ground troops were moved in to Miramshah Bazaar on Thursday as tanks and artillery continued to pound militant hideouts in and around the bazaar.

Sources said that after weakening the targets with air assaults, security forces were now moving into the built area and clearing hideouts. The officials said that security forces were also consolidating the positions in and around Miramshah Bazaar.

The official sources also said that the ground offensive in Miramshah has started at 6 am and would continue.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) is yet to issue an official confirmation of casualties in the operation.

The military operation named 'Zarb-i-Azb' was initiated in the North Waziristan region in June. At least 430,000 people have fled the region into nearby areas of Pakistan as well as neighbouring Afghanistan, the biggest movement of refugees in Pakistan in years.

Security officials had claimed that over 200 local and foreign militants had been killed in the aerial bombings.

Earlier a ground assault was delayed due to the issues that cropped up during evacuation of internally displaced people (IDPs).

Newspapers always publish what happens on the ground. REALLY. The papers merely carry statements issued by Pakistan Army without verification of journalists. No journalists are allowed to enter the area and verify the statements issued by Pakistan Army. This is because they want to hide from the people of Pakistan the miseries and killings that occur due to Military operations.

Best wishes and God speed success to Pak army for launching ground operation in NW. Sincerely hope that the military takes action against all militant groups and not on selective basis and push them out of its territory. This should be a decisive operation and should not be called off till writ of the state is completely restored in whole of NW.

Am I the only one noticing the drop of suicide bombings since the operation started? (Smaller attacks on soldiers or the occasional bombing in the shrine in Islamabad not withstanding). Seems like we should have done this about ten years ago before 55 thousand people died.

Going by the statement from ISPR (if true) and indeed by most comments from Pakistanis ... it would seem that while earlier only the Pakistani civilians were "confused" as to who is friend and who is not... now it appears that even the ONLY real institution in Pakistan i.e. the Army too has "lost it" -- meaning that it also does not know or differentiate between who is the friend and who the enemy.... very sad but true.

What poor reporting. In the interactive map you have pictures of airstrikes done by US f15, French Rafael, and Indian border guards. Does no one know that pakistan does not possess US F15 or the French Rafeal fighters and that India is on our eastern border and their guards will not be patrolling a fence in WAZIRISTAN? Come on Dawn EDUCATION EDUCATION EDUCATION, you are supposed to be educated. This is simply unacceptable reporting

I dont know how to believe ISPR when no independent jounalist is allowed to have independent news---this is like americans were saying ,they have wiped taliban and goody news from iraq but it turn out to be pack of lies---similarly ,ISPR is doing the same thing and one day ,it will dawn on us that operation was a failure----let the independent reporters report for real picture so that we dont have to lick our wounds later

Why did 60,000 innocent people in Pakistan have to die before the military command decided that the only good taliban is a dead taliban? Why were the pleas of the rest of the world for Pakistan to stop providing safe haven to terrorists ignored all these years until now?

Shan
Jun 27, 2014 11:59pm

@Shaikh Mohommd Of course there have been miseries during this full-scale operation, and there will be more- Torn and amputed dead bodies of women & children, spread all-over the ruins etc, etc. The role of media has been very negative. No army can operate successfully with a hostile media riding on its shoulders. Especially, our media is fully equipped and inclined to malign the army over such scenes, pictures and movies. It is good that media is not allowed at all. Else, the army has to do the life saving of journalist at the cost of defamation on massive and international scale.

Shan
Jun 28, 2014 12:17am

@khan It is a fact that Haqqanis had good ties with our people, but they had also been helping TTP in the past. This dual character of Huqqanis had to come to an end. Now it is a beginning of an end.

Jai
Jun 28, 2014 07:36pm

As much as I would like to believe this, it has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Pak army is definitely trying to root out the Uzbeks and the Chechens. But the declaration that they are acting against the Haqqanis is only for foreign consumption. After all the clamour in US congress to make aid conditional on an operation in N.Waziristan, it is perfectly understandable.
