I RECENTLY witnessed a cigarette manufacturing company’s salesman in the market promoting their brand. The use of laptop and presentation was impressive but it was certainly a violation of the ‘The Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Ordinance 2002’ by the cigarette company.

Although the ministry occasionally issues show-cause notices regarding these violations, the government needs to implement laws in letter and in spirit.

Mere putting up warning signboards is not enough. Even in the federal capital some institutions are violating anti-smoking laws as smoking prevails in our government offices and ministries. I was stunned to see young lads smoking in educational institutions in Sector H-8 where there are no checks and balances.

Small huts are selling cigarettes in front of hospitals and government institutions in sector H-8. The ministry of health needs to take some solid steps. Although the Sheesha is banned on paper, its users are increasing day by day. In posh areas, Sheesa huts or resorts are freely opened for all-age groups.

“No person shall smoke or use tobacco in any other form in any place of public work and use,” says Section 5 of the Smoking Ordinance of 2002. But alas, these are all good things on paper only.
