Gabashvili faces Gulbis

BARCELONA: Fresh from ousting second-seeded David Ferrer, Russia’s Teymuraz Gabas­hvili knocked out another Spaniard to reach the quarter-finals at the Barcelona Open on Thursday.

The 28-year-old, who ousted Ferrer on Wednesday, powered past Inigo Cervantes 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and twenty minutes to seal a last-eight clash against ninth-seeded Latvian Ernests Gulbis.

Gulbis also won against a local hope on Thursday when he defeated Albert Montanes 7-5, 6-1.

Earlier, fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan cruised past Andrey Golubev and into the fourth round with a clinical 6-0, 6-4 win over the Kazakh.

The 12th-seeded Cilic, on Tuesday, beat qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) to enter the third round.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Almagro defeted Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Verdasco had defeated Frenchman Kenny De Schepper 6-4, 6-3. —Agencies
