HYDERABAD: In an obvious reference to the recent statement of Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif in which he said the Pakistan Army will resolutely preserve its own dignity and institutional pride, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah Saturday said that there is no threat to Parliament, democracy or the government.

Speaking to media representatives prior to his address at the annual dinner of Pakistan Engineering Council at Qasimabad, he said that in case of any risk to the democratic system, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will support Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The opposition leader termed democracy a little child who can commit mistakes, which can be corrected.

The PPP leader said that the country faced dictatorial regimes or controlled democracies during the last 65 years, but democracy is now flourishing in the country.

About the possibility of an alliance with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in the Sindh government, Shah said that there could be no last word in politics.

He said the MQM leadership has already contradicted its statements regarding martial law, adding that all steps will be taken which will be beneficial for the people of the province.

To another question, the opposition leader said that Pakistan is a nuclear country and the government should play the role of an arbitrator among Muslim countries.

He prayed for the success of talks with the Pakistani Taliban.
