Corps commanders meet

RAWALPINDI: The Army’s top brass held a meeting at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi Wednesday under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Raheel Sharif, DawnNews reported.

The meeting focused on the country’s overall security situation. Moreover, internal and external threats to national security were also reviewed in the meeting.

According to sources, Gen Sharif took the corps commanders into confidence over talks with the political leadership over the country's national security situation.

The security situation on western borders was also discussed in the meeting.

Separately, the meeting also focused on ongoing peace talks between the government and the Taliban.

The timing of the meeting was seen as important after Gen Raheel’s comments at a Special Services Group base in Tarbela that the army would “resolutely preserve its own dignity and institutional pride” sent shockwaves in government circles.

The largest budget yet. $6 billion and counting. For an Army that mainly sits in barracks. And get regular paychecks. While the generals and colonels need their perks....While those soldiers and captains and majors who are commanded to go out,..take care of business are slaughtered by the roadside, in their vans, in their lorries, in their compounds. At their check posts.

I sincerely wish that Army and Judiciary in Pakistan take over the control to save the country from termoil. It is sad but true that democracy is high jacked by AAZ and NS who have ruined the country and are playing musical chairs. This time Army and Judiciary should rewamp the entire electoral system, education, health, security, exports, development program and manage thru a coalition of all major parties under strict checks and balances. Just wishful thinking!!!

@usman786: you misunderstood these meetings.Skype is not reliable and confidential medium for high profile,sensitive,secret and confidential meeting regarding security of Islamic Republic of Pakistan's Geographical and Theoretical Boundaries.

@usman786: What is the encryption standard used in Skype ? And from where it is being hosted ? Why is it free after all someone must have invested money on skype servers and data banks ?

@HasanZaheer: That is exactly what has happened. Expats can now see families, cousins, what have you, weekly, if not daily. It has cut down on trips. There are weddings conducted on Skype. You are behind times.

Army must do whatever it is necessary to get its respect and dignity back. The civilian governments will only do what it is necessary to keep their power, they have no respect for an institution (army/navy/air force) which has saved this country from going into dark ages. One recent example is see what they are doing to General Musharraf who has saved Pakistan from destruction.

The meeting sends a strong signal to the Government to beware of any step taken without approval and consent of the Army. Army has a divine right to rule Pakistan and will not give up its right without a fight. The Government should know that the people will be on its side in any controversy with the Army. So Nawaz Sharif should get bold and don't be a coward. Take steps which you think is proper. Remember the people have given you the mandate and are behind you if you address the people on the issues and take them into confidence. Ignore USA and their agents.

Reality is all Defence forces, intelligence, politicians, police, and judiciary have failed in protecting common people. They just have been blaming each other. Sincerity and honesty is missing in all once one institute is sincere Pakistan will be different and progress. True Pakistani.

@Hyderabad wala: Ever general was once a captain/ major and had his share. general colonels also get killed for us in roadside bombs.you dont notice them much cos they are less in number as compared to soldiers/ captains.

@Hyderabad wala: So what is your point? This is how all armies work. They serve as soldiers and captains and eventually rise through the ranks to become generals. That said, how much is spent on the army or how its services are used is determined by the political government - which, by all measures, is clueless.

Let us face facts. Democracy does not suit Pakistan and we never elect the right leaders. Nawaz is the PM simply because he belongs to the biggest province. He will not last his full term as had happened every time in the past.

It is interesting to read the comments of Dawn readers. I am very sympatric with many of u who are expecting any good from holy army. I can see that every one is up set with current situation of my Country. Yes indeed We are in very bad shape just because of poor governance. But if we honestly analyzed last 43 years, who had practically ruled us Answer is Pak army. (from 1971 to day) army direct rule is 20 years (Zia and Musharraf ) plus 18 indirect rule 17 years. Nawaz and Benazir type PMs are just without any executive power. Z.A Bhutto was real PM. Even today all powers are with Army Nawaz is just a dummy. So bring army giving them more powers, not difficult to imagine what will be the shape of my country.

Sad to see so many people from Pakistan supporting army unconditionally. It must be remembered that even an imperfect democrcy is much better than a perfect dictatorship. When you lose your voice, you lose your soul. Democracy and pluralism is the only way out. Great civilizations were brought down when personal greed and lust trumped the collective good. Army must remain subservient to civilian power under all circumstances. Look at Gen.Zia how his lust and unbridled zealotary has brought Pakistan to near ruination. A land so endowed wnatural beauty and resources should be thriving and bustling, and not looking for sugar dady.
